here is a pic of a toyota 5sfe timing belt with ~100k on it..it came outta itchyb's old 5sfe.
this is the reason toyota recommends doing the timing belt every 60k.

i inspected my 60k old belt at 120K on the dot, it can go a couple thousand more miles.

i twisted it back and forth and ran my fingernail over the back of it. the belt wasnt signifigantly glazed and i couldnt feel any cracks on the backside of it.

i wish i had a timing chain instead of a belt.

Maybe that's the going rate where you are; I have a Toyota Dealership in Milwaukee offer to change mine (5S) for 170 (parts and labor)... I'm sure you'd probably throw in a water pump, though.


Never wish for a timing chain. They can still fail (look at the problems Volkswagen has with their 1.8T). Plus timing chain engines are almost always interference, so when they do go, your engine is essentially done.

Maybe I'm not reading this right. You opened everything up just to inspect it and you didn't bother replacing it? You sure you're not talking about the serpentine belt? There's a huge difference. You can't see the timing belt from the outside. It's completely covered.

Maybe I'm not reading this right. You opened everything up just to inspect it and you didn't bother replacing it? You sure you're not talking about the serpentine belt? There's a huge difference. You can't see the timing belt from the outside. It's completely covered.

our cars dont have serpentine belts. We have different belts for everything. Alternator, AC, PS.

Have you seen alot of front seals go on the 7AFE's? or valve cover gaskets? I had my valve cover gasket replaced as it was leaking. He said he front seal looked OK and wasn't leaking at all.


And I see my water pump on the back side of the engine in the open? And changine it seems to be a simple job. Any reason that I should be worried at 100K + miles?

Anyone else have problems with the alternator belt squealing on 3-2 downshifts where you redline the engine? (RPM matched)

Dead serious, Doc! This is what I was told last winter. Call them up and ask how much theyd charge for a timing belt replacement on a 2.2L 94 Celica. I was calling all around the state out of sheer curiousity just to see what people were quoting, and I got anywhere from 170 to 300 dollars (the final guy I went with did it for 220, mainly because his shop was 100 yards downhill from me and I could push my lifeless car there without paying for a tow).

i pulled the side cover below the valve cover and inspected the timing belt.
toyota 1zzfe, 2zzfe are both using timing chains and have had very very few chain failures considering the large volumes of those engines worldwide.

you cant compare VW to a toyota when discussing reliabilty, thats like comparing a corolla to an evo and saying that toyotas are all slow.

A lot? No, not really. They generally start going bad after 100K, but usually they leak very little so it's not a big problem, it's just a good thing to replace while it's all apart. The valve cover gaskets seem to go bad more often, but are also much easier to replace, especially on a 7A. The water pump isn't hard to change either, and if it's not leaking, I would't worry about it. The squealing just sounds like you need to tighten up the belt a little.

You know, after I thought about it, I realized I was thinking 3SGTE. The 5S is easier to change since it only has one cam gear and it's easier to access. In fact, I've never done a timing belt on a 5S! LOL

Now im no mechanic or anything, but if your timing belt breaks... isint that going to royaly screw up your piston timing and probably blow the whole engine ? Valves and pistons collide or something like that.

7A-FE is non interference, its really hard to get pistons to meet valves.

I know you've to change the timing belt every 100,000kms.
But is there a time limit.
I remember someone at toyota telling it 100,000km or 10 years, whichever
comes first. Is this true? cause by the looks of it my car will 10 years old before it reaches
100,000 kms
