hey guys...finally ready to start getting parts together to turbo my 5sfe, and i have some questions for people who have done this and/or will be doing this:

what are the major pros/cons of going hybrid and using a ge head? (i.e. extra work, hp possibilites, etc)

what type of engine managment system is the best for this situation? (piggyback, standalone?)

what octane requirement would the engine have if i did not advance the timing off base or increase the compression ratio and used a ct26 turbo?

and finally, are there any other little tips/tricks i should know?

please post replies in this thread...i think everyone should know about this.

thanks!

Well if you go with a GE head you need to find yourself a 3S-GTE ECU as a start. It isn't as simple as using a GE head instead of an FE head.

Octane would have to 91+ at a minimum with any setup, higher the better to decrease chance of detonation. As for timing, don't know much about that but compression ratio you would want to lower not increase, since the 5S already has a high compression ratio for a FI application.

Dude i have just finnished building a 5sgte and its fun....but thats enough of me..hehe

The ge/gte head will flow ALOT more air quicker than the fe head will.... And more flow of air is more HP.

I would recommend getting a Standalone to run it. I have an EMS8860 running mine.

Have a look at what the Standalones can do and in the long run they save you money i think.

For Fuel i would use as high octaine as you can find.....tune it on that and KEEP using it....

If he goes standalone you dont have to worry about getting a 3sgte ecu

walker said 3s ecu, ice23q said EMS

I say get the EMS but if you want the 3s-gte ecu, I have a 3rd gen ECU for sale. 75$ shipped

thanks for the help, guys.

the outback ems has got to be killer, but if i can pick up celicast3sgte's ecu for a song and a dance, how much extra would a standalone get me for the other $1375? (assuming of course, that i wouldn't need a custom harness made up).

my goal is 200hp. i know i could get more than that, but i've driven alot of 220+ hp fwd cars and been a little disappointed in the overall usability. one of my good friends has an sr20det in his se-r, and even though he's just over 200hp, you can't floor it in 1st or the tires spin like crazy. i plan to run in tsm class for autocross, so low end torque and usable horsepower are huge goals for me.

as of right now, i'm planning on:

-stock block, head, and internals
-3sgte manifold & oilpan
-ct26 turbo (stock, right?)
-recirculated bov
-fmic
-bigger injectors & fuel pump
-clutch & flywheel upgrades
-possibly lsd, depends on $

i'd like to get a pretty basic setup going and then upgrade things as necessary. my motor has under 100k on it and i take good care of it...so i'm not planning to rebuild until it's donesville. when that happens i'll upgrade to forged internals, a bigger turbo, etc.

If your goals are around 200HP than I would recommend that you just read the stickies. In particular look at Manny's build.

You will need a Walboro 255lph fuel pump. Injectors go for the 460cc from an 89-91 RX7 N/A. Read those two stickies.

I found another way to make the head work on the block ....
IPB Image
take this center part out and use 5sfe head gasket with 5sfe block. no drilling to the block...
