![]() Click here for more details "We feel there's a hole in our lineup," says Kevin Hunter, the vice president of Calty Design Research. "Toyota hasn't had a sports car since the Supra was dropped in 1997. We need some emotional punch in our lineup, a halo product." Toyota envisions that punch to be a rear-wheel-drive Hybrid Sports Concept (HSC) that develops 400 horsepower. "It's a new kind of sports car for the 21st century," adds Hunter. "Eco and emotion in a sports car concept with a performance target of 0-60 mph in about 4 seconds and a price tag in the mid-$30,000 range." It's no Volta, but it sure looks good. |

Yeah, I believe when concepts are actually turned in to production they tone it down a little bit.
Still, the article brings up a good point about Toyota : QUOTE The Toyota Supra left these shores 10 years ago and Lexus took over the prestige role for the whole company. But as Toyota has crafted generation after generation of reliable yet uninspiring automobiles, the family of Toyota buyers has begun to look a little old. A sports car might be the right thing to wake up a new generation, especially since Toyota has a relevant performance heritage thanks to ownership of a Formula 1 team since 2002, a piece of victory at the 2003 Indianapolis 500, and a new fleet of cars in NASCAR's Nextel Cup for 2007 They have to produce *something* at some point in time, maybe a toned down version of this will become a reality, if they can work out the battery issues. Looks nothing like a G35 coupe. Looks like it has potential. It looks like a compact car weighing 2400-2600lb in curb weight. Hopefully it's rear wheel drive or all wheel drive to compete the latest cars out today but the design already looks like its going to be front wheel drive. And hopefully it won't be a AZ series engine since it's ranging $30,000+.
And no, the 7th Gen Celicas weren't really REAL sports cars. The GT-S could barely hold up to 300hp turbo'd with aftermarkets unless you go full custom lubrication and fabrication and most I've heard was 400whp and that requires a big time butchet in which rarely anyone would spend on a 2ZZ engine. I think they were talkin about REAL sports cars like the Supra with 320hp-1300hp potential. Quote: "But as Toyota has crafted generation after generation of reliable yet uninspiring automobiles, the family of Toyota buyers has begun to look a little old." I knew a guy, master mechanic. I'm talkin REAL race track mechanic works on nothing but offroad toyota running 10 seconds and under from Puerto Rico. His friend payed him big time to customize a Toyota Matrix XR with the 2ZZ-GE engine. He told me he has never worked on a 2ZZ motor before from Toyota. And out of every other motor he's worked on, that motor is the most pain in the butt motor he has ever worked on. And it's the hardest to work with and hardest to get gaines from tuning. So yes... we need REAL sports cars. ![]() This post has been edited by ExSane: Dec 25, 2006 - 8:37 AM -------------------- ![]() |

from what i've been reading on various enthusiast websites, this car will indeed come to production, but be toned down a lot, exterior wise.
it's no longer in the "fantasize" phase, it's more in the "lets see how we can pull it off for under 40 grand" phase. pretty sweet. i guess we'll see more at the detroit auto show later next month. |
