taking off the dash???, heater core related Options

I plan on replacing my heater core this sat and was wondering where i should start when i start taking off the dash???

what else do i need to take off? i assume glove box, inst. cluster, climate cont., ect but what elseneeds to be taken off that may not be so obvious?

It is very hard to remove the dashboard without removing the knee panels (the sides of the center console). To remove the knee panels, you'll need to remove the armrest/ handbrake surround then the knee panels (the later is a single molded part). This bit is essentially the same as when doing a short shifter swap, so look at the stickie for that mod for detailed guidelines. You'll also likely need to remove the upper and lower steering wheel shaft trim panels.

There are something like 7 bolts that hold the dashboard on (from memory, I did mine a couple of weeks ago). One is behind one of the air vents and one is behind the instrument cluster. The rest you can find just by looking or gently tugging to find which areas aren't moving much.

Don't forget to unplug every electrical plug you can find - there is a loom that is fixed to the underside of the dash, plus possibly an alarm sensor (depending upon which alarm system you have fitted - toyota had a few). Don't do the work with the keys in the ignition or within 10 mins of removing them to prevent accidental setting off of the airbags.

Disconnect the negative battery terminal, first and foremost. Work slowly and keep the fasteners you remove well organized, and lay out a piece of cardboard or a box to set all your panels on.

I'd start by removing the stereo and climate control surrounds, vents, knee panels/center console, steering wheel surrounds and gauge cluster like BloodyStupidDavey mentioned. From there you should be able to see what you have to do.
