Can someone confirm that when you turn an axle on a MR2 LSD, the other axle will spin the same direction. And on an open diff. they will spin opposing each other.

I have a KAAZ LSD - and it definitely keeps both axles spinning the same direction (and you use non-LSD axles with the KAAZ LSD). -Charlie -------------------- 2003 Subaru WRX Wagon

From what Ive researched about mr2 transmissions, theres locking diff, vlsd, and open diff. The locking will always spin like you stated your does. The vlsd will only work in the car when pressure is applied to the diff. And the open diff. is just open. I guess Ill find out about the vlsd when I get mine in the car. later

I just got my 1991 e-153 mr2 transmission today! I also got the jack shaft and axles. I paid $480 total and picked it up locally. I still am not positive it has vlsd. But I think it is. I put a few links to pics of the diff. Can anyone tell me if its vlsd or open diff??/?????
I put the clutch disc over the input shaft and spun the disc. The diff spun both axles in the same direction! If I held one stationary, they both tried to spin and also in the same direction. If I spun the axle by hand sometimes the axles spun together and sometimes they spun opposite. Thanks for any help! I wont know for sure if its lsd until I get it in the car. Later!!!!!!!!!!!!!! trans My Webpage My Webpage My Webpage My Webpage |

If you hold one axle and turn the input shaft both shafts should turn the same way..
i'm betting it's a VLSD trans. -------------------- 87 4runner DLX 22re, 5spd, 4.30gr, 4" lift, 30" tires, HID w/ Projectors, 6spkr + sub, custom exhaust, 94 celica leather seats, SR5 gauge cluster and clinometer. Future engine swap... possibly a 2jzge.

Hmmm... that still doesn't explain the fact that the VLSD option from Toyota was not available until '93, as far as I know.It may still be another type of LSD though... -Charlie -------------------- 2003 Subaru WRX Wagon

QUOTE(toyotacrazy @ Feb 12, 2007 - 6:46 PM) could it be a dealer added lsd? Most likely someone before you put an LSD in it. I know that if i have the car up on stands and i turn one wheel... the other turns in the same direction. When I was working with the open diff.. holding it in my hand I put finger in one side turned it and the other side went the opposite direction. Some diff's won't lock up until there is a force applied like when driving.. The only way to truly test it I believe.. would be to put the front end up.. make sure u use a lot of jack stands under and on the sides of the car.. then start it.. put it into first gear.. you can let the clutch up and the wheels will just turn with the engine.. it won't stall. So get out then and try to stop one of the wheels with your hand.. don't be dumb about this obviously.. but on an open diff you will be able to stop one while the other still turns.. on an LSD you shouldn't be able to do this. Correct me if I'm wrong.. I usually learn things by trying and I've never tried to do that because I knew I had a VLSD to begin with. -------------------- 87 4runner DLX 22re, 5spd, 4.30gr, 4" lift, 30" tires, HID w/ Projectors, 6spkr + sub, custom exhaust, 94 celica leather seats, SR5 gauge cluster and clinometer.
