Im thinking about getting a 7th Gen short shifter but i was talking to a buddy of mine that had an older miata and he said that he just cut his shifter short and then rethreaded the end of it for his shifter knob. how hard would it be for me to do that? or would it even work that way?

well, it is possible to do that, but that's not exactly how a short shifter works. The proper way is to change the pivot point so the throws are actually shorter.

If you go the cutting/rethreading route:

1- the shifter will be shorter in height
2- the throws still be shorter depending on how much you cut
but, the shorter you make it, the harder it will be to shift. A proper short shifter will not change the force required to shift.

im not really looking to make it shorter throws so much, i am planning to turn the car into a show car one day but as of right now i just want it to look shorter. i dont race or anything so shortening the trows wont do too much for me really.

I would just go buy a short shifter if I were you.

i cut mine, i have a gt-s. and i mean its was so long b4 that it does make a nice difference. it does make the thorw shotter in the sense that your hand travels less, but what u gain in distance u sacrifice in force. it is harder to shift bcuz u dont have the leverage of the added lenght. i was pleasantly surprised with my results when i cut mine.
