im wondering how to manually open/close the top. is there something you need to disconnect/release before you can do this, or do you just overpower the motors?

my motors are working fine, but i think i have a loose wire, as the top will open then stop (sometimes halfway...). I dont think its the motors because when the top wont work, the motors aren't making any sounds (like they are on) and it happens very randomly. When the roof is closed, and i push the "close" button sometimes I can hear them working and others no noise, so I will try and check for a loose wire, but until then how do i do it manually?

First of all, I'm not sure i'd try to do it manually if your mtors do still work. There are already a few peole that have tried it manually and it just ended up killing thier motors because of the strain it puts on them.

I'd get your motors fixed first before trying to do it manually. But if you end up in a spot when you HAVE to do it manually, there is a switch in the trunk, right behind where the top would be when it's down that says "auto" and "manual", you just switch that to manual and you'll be able to put the top down without using the motors.

Those switches can be a bit of a pain as well...you can disassemble the switch and clean the contacts inside to make sure they are making good contact, I had the same problem and that fixed it, bad connections are bad connections I guess. Just hope you never need a new switch...each of those 3 swtiches is $150+ mad.gif

Its not the motors, as when the top stops working it just stops. If it were the motors I believe they "die" a little before they completely malfunction (they make noise, but dont put the top up as fast and/or need assistance to put the top up)

I will be taking the switches apart and cleaning the contacts/checking the grounds as thats what I (hope) think is the problem.

Car has 124XXX miles on odo.

where is the boot panel? in the trunk?

Is doing things manually hard on the motors? I would imagine that the manual override would be if the motors malfunctioned (broke) but my motors are still working in good cond and I do not want to damage them by manually closing the roof.

My top did this once, & after I cleaned my switch, it never did it again. I would try that. Yes the manual top latch is in the trunk on the drivers side, behind the little cover (that keeps falling off in my car).

Mine takes like 10 seconds. Its quick enough I can do it at a red light (if the light just turned red)

Off topic, but where are the japan/euro verts "converted" at? AFAIK 90% of the vert in NA are converted at asc (american sunroof corp), with the exception of cars that have a seperate convertible chassis (corvette -> chassis = coupe or convertible) Is this right? Or am I on glue? Does toyota make convertibles in a toyota factory?

I'm pretty sure mine was done at asc, as I have an asc sticker in my drivers doorjam up where it hinges to the body...
