this setup, whos is it? Options

ok i was looking through my pictures and i found this pic,i love this setup whos is it?I was wondering what it sounds like to have the subs pointing into teh cabin of the car.

I turned my subs around one time and took the seats down to hear it personally i found that i didnt like the sound at all it lacks the reverberation needed to create a proper bass. I found it alot weaker and basically it was like i was getting air blown at my head

well, whoever owns that car, it appears to be a coupe which is red, and is not a gt-4 or ss series

Depending on the quality of your subs, you may get more mechanical/cone noise from facing your subs into the cab. I have always preferred to have my subs facing the back most of all, second facing up.

What I want to know is if anyone has used any of the shallow mount subs to make a really small box in their hatch? I picked up a Kicker CVT 12" with a 4 5/16" mount depth and I have been designing a box to fit between the strut towers, but since I put my strut bar in, I'm a little short on space. I'm also going to hide the amp, cap and xover behind the seats sunk-in to the back of the box, if there's room.

idk, i don't have a coupe. in the hatchback, we dont have sumthin like that, so it would have to be custom.

yea im thiinking of these subs from best buy,i haeard them with a good amp and the hit hard,but they were in a 100$ box...I like how they look like a real old sub look.

Bass is omni directional so the only thing that subs pointing towards you do is suffocation. The sounds are the same regardless of posistion but air is moved in the direction the sub is facing, therefore when the subs are pointing in you feel it right in your chest, its alot different than just listening to bass, its like a full body experience lol.

when the subs are faced forward it doesnt give the vibrations from the soundwaves much to bounce off of ....when they face the back they have more to bounce off of causing the deep tones and vibrations.....i would recomend not doing that (the pic) cause you can also blow subs not giving the soundwaves things to bounce off of just like playing subs in a hatch with the hatch open not good for the subs at all

kinda the same idea with building subs in a box instead of just bolting them to open areas like other speakers it causes them to tear believe me i used to do installs for a living

So true. The cone is displacing air when it moves and if there's nowhere for it to go, the pressure can cause damage. Bouncing the sound off of the hatch makes a noticeable difference as well. When I had my 15's and my 12 in my old car, I made multiple boxes for different orientations of the subs to find which position and angle sounded the best.

Bass may be omni-directional, but there are other factors. If your sub doesn't have the leads woven into the spider, they can slap against the sub and cause mechanical noise, which tends to be louder if your subs face into the cab. I always had my subs facing backwards and firing in reverse phase. I got the same amount of kick and smooth bass.

yea i think im going to face them the other way dignally and block off from the trunk to teh cab
Im going to take out the rear seats and somehow make somethinng, with he sub box as the wall between the so it will make a V witht eh bottom of the Vpointing towrd teh cab and teh top toward the rear.(ill make a pic soon.

They blow because when you have your hatch open, there is no cabin gain,Sub sounds softer so people turn the subs up and blow them. Nothing to do with sound not bouncing off enough...

Playings subs with the hatch open is not a good idea because there is no reason to do so but it will NOT blow your subs. Subs blow when they are not in a box because there is no air pressure(volume of air in box acts like a shock absorber) to "control" the cone.

The setup in the first post is perfectly fine and will NOT blow the subs.

aaaaaaany way like i said ive seen it happen its not going to go immediately no but it does cause more wear and tear on the subs and they will eventually go and that will be a big factor in it aaaand putting subs in too small a box isnt good either cause they dont get the airspace they need and can pop when tryn to play (not good for the sub) and its not false info like i said ive done this for a living

I rest my case. You base it on experience and "common sense" when something goes wrong and make a professional assumption of what caused an error. While it is ok on occasions, more often than not it is not actually what is causing the error.

I will just state a few points again. The air in the box provides acoustical suspension to the sub. The bigger the box, the less air would restrict the driver's motion which = less damping. Use a subwoofer free air and it will have lower power handling because the damping from the box isnt there. Having a subwoofer installed as it is shown in the first post will not cause the subwoofer to die earlier, there is no reason to believe so.

Oh well, believe what you will but if you ever get the free time. Post this question on an audio forum and see what people say. Google should also bring up information on this. Search for subwoofer enclosure building or something like that and you will get experts on the field with articles regarding things like this.
