No, I'm not. I'm from north of the border and was planning on visiting Detroit and Chicago during my break later this month. Thought I might pick up a Celica while there, though I may have changed my mind. It's just too much paperwork to export/import a used vehicle across the border. =(

Nooo, I'm from Toronto. frown.gif

I'm considering taking a much needed break from work this month. I thought I could kill two birds with one stone by going down to the states for vacation and maybe picking up a car too.

I really appreciate the kind offer, though. Have you imported a car before? The RIV need so many documents! frown.gif

its not that bad...we imported a 6th gen coupe about 2 months ago for my gf...it wasnt as much paperwork as you would think.

"How-To" Import a car from the U.S.

theres a pretty much step by step "How-To" of how to bring a car across from the states. One good thing about importing a car is since your in Toronto, the RIV office is just off the 427. Im originaly from Etobicoke, so i was lucky enough to be able to bring the documentation to the office. There are some pretty good deals. If i were you, i would try looking for a car in Buffalo somewhere around there. Detroit isnt that good for cars. We had to drive like 5 hours down to Columbus from Windsor. Honestly, importing isnt that bad..and it doesnt cost too much either. If you buy private though...get them to write a bill of sale for like $1000 for the purchase price. Cuts down on alot of the costs at the boarder and registering.

Excellent guide to importing! Your experience definitely verifies all the research I've done on the subject thus far and also fills in some of the blanks in my reading. I wasn't sure how the title was going to be transferred and how the temporary plate would be handled. I noticed that you didn't mention anything about the 6.1% duty though. Weren't Celicas manufactured in Japan and then shipped over here? Are used vehicles not subject to duty?

I guess I have reservations about how the transaction (with deposit and title transfer) would go with me being from across the border. I'd wanted to spend maybe 4-5 days vacationing in the States, which would make it difficult to get all the paperwork in order on time. I also wanted to get an inspection done on the vehicle before purchase, so that's another step that would complicate the process. Maybe I should just forget about the vacation and focus on getting a car. =/

ETA: Oh, and um, unfortunately, I haven't been able to find a suitable car in Buffalo. It was the first place I looked, but no luck.

We didnt have to pay that much duty on it...we paid $173 i think at customs with the $1000 purchase price, thats including the $100 air con tax. So, unless thats what they charged us for and didnt charge us for the tax....but i dunno..we didnt pay that much. All i can say is keep searching though man..it took me a good month and a half to find the coupe or any other cars that looked decent.
