There have been a few threads about this idea but nothing that was very informative/complete. I have an ST and I feel that for the power goal I have (250hp), the easiest on my wallet/brain would be fitting a turbo onto a 4A-GZE. I consider the s/c version because I have heard that stock internals can handle quite a bit of boost (12-14 psi iirc) which with the proper tuning could achieve 250.

But as I said, nothing on the site seems to give a lot of info on doing this modification and I'm not asking for a volley of information but if anybody knows of other sites or really anything that can offer more information on this it would be greatly appreciated. I always research things thoroughly before starting a project and I want as much as I can soak in.

I want to know what parts I will need like:
What kind of exhaust manifold will accept a turbo (what engine has one stock, does it need to be custom fab, do any performance companies make one)
What kind of turbo(s) links up to said manifold
Does the TB for the s/c accept the port for the turbo inlet
Should I use the low CR 4agze or use the 20v and swap out for low CR pistons and rods
Has anybody done this kind of work, if so, who

The easy way... use the stock 4AGZE bottom-end, which is very strong. The rods rival those of the 3SGTE and the pistons aren't too shabby either and you'll want the low comp pistons if you plan on building a reliable boost motor. The 4AGZE mounts the supercharger on a short intake manifold, which cannot be used with a turbo set-up (unless you twincharge, but that's a whole nother can of worms). In other words, you'll need to source a FWD 4AG intake manifold, which isn't very hard. Depending on which version of the 4AGZE you start with, it's either a bigport intake manifold from the AW11 MR2 or the 88-89 Corolla GTS. The other is the smallport 4AGZE (90-91 JDM), in which case you'll need an intake manifold from either a 90-91 Corolla GTS or a 90-92 Geo Prizm GSI. As for the turbo manifold, there is no stock turbo 4AG manifold, but there are plenty of aftermarket choices. Basic log type, custom, tubular, etc. Plenty of choices, just be sure it's designed for a FWD 4AG. The RWD models may have clearance issues. Again, like the manifold, a lot of different turbo choices depending on the manifold choice and what you want. Custom flanges for different turbo choices only require minor mods and welding. Need to know more?

Always. What about ECU settings. Do I use the ECU from the gze? I would assume that the settings would be all wrong for super to turbo conversion. Would a stand alone be more beneficial/easier and do these exist?

Best would be a standalone, however the 4AGZE ECU has been used in turbo set-ups without a piggyback, so the 4AGZE ECU fuelmaps and such work well be it turbo boost or supercharger boost. I think the best set-up would be a 4AGZE ecu with a piggyback for further tuning. You can look at it like a custom turbo set-up except with a slightly better capable ECU in terms of handling boost and fuel maps. Again, a standalone would be best and for the most part somewhat easier to wire up, but much more difficult to tune properly. The benefits however, is basically infinite tunability.

Ok, so use the ECU from the gze and just run a piggyback on it. Sounds simple enough...
Since you seem like you have a pretty extensive knowledge into this subject field and I have you at my disposal, how much boost could the stock engine handle using a fmic and what kind of power do you suspect can be attained from running such a setup (with proper tuning)?

Anybody else that knows anything about this is welcome to buzz in. Just remember to keep your answers in the form of a question. I like rhetoric.

I don't speculate too much... but do consider this is a 1.6 liter. I would imagine the stock bottom-end could handle around 15psi and make around 250 horsepower.

Good to know. That's all I need for now.

But just out of curiosity, what kind of changes would have to be made (if it is possible) to make a 4A-GZTE?

I WANT TO JOIN THE WORLD OF THE BOOSTED. I think I need to get a hold of an older mr2 engine. Didn't they come with a lsd tranny?

Can I use that tranny on my car?

I probably sound like I'm on ephedrine.

Older MR2s (AW11) besides the supercharged ones used basically the same C52 trans as the 6gc ST. None in the US came with a factory LSD save some of the SW20 MR2s.

As for a 4AGZTE... umm... heh. Pointless now-a-days with improving turbo technology. You'll need a clever way of engaging low-end boost with the supercharger and top-end boost with the turbo. I don't know of any successful builds...

SpacePanda I know a guy in Houston who had a Levin clip [4A-GZE FWD with LSD] for sale. Let me see if I can get ahold of him and if he still has that available. If not that then you can check with Sun's Auto - they carry many many Toyota FI clips [They also have a BEAMS Celica clip biggrin.gif ] and have great prices.
I'll let you know what I find.
