> Engine Oil Coolers, Which is Better?

I want to get one but not sure which type to get. I believe from the ones pictured below, the first is water cooled and the other is air cooled.

Which is best?

For the water cooled one, I assume the oil filter now goes on that silver core - would I have to start using 7th gen Celica filters since the kit below is for a 7th gen? I plan on custom fitting it.

i used an air cooled one when i first put my headers in. I used one from flexalite, the kit runs about $130. I did have to use a bigger oil filter, i think it was for like..a camry v6 motor or somethin. It wasnt much bigger. But it worked great, i mainly put it on because when i installed my headers, my exhaust had to be pulled up right against my oil pan *bad plannin on my part and also due to having to modify the headers*. Without it, i pretty much boiled my oil, but when i threw it on, ran fine since, no oil temp issues.

if you live in a cold climate area use the water one, if its mild to hot all year round use the air one.

the first is basicly an improved version of the stock oil cooler that comes on most 5s' ect. (nice find BTW, got a link?)
if you dont have the plumming for it already, i would just use the aftermarket style cooler, just be sure that the sandwich plate you use has a thermostat in it, so that it bypasses the cooler when oil is not yet up to temp and cold mornings.

2000 kia sportage (2.0L 4 cyl) has a pretty big water to oil cooler on it stock, if that would fit it'd be easily available from any kia dealer and probably alot cheaper. the website he linked the picture from is TRD Japan and is in all japanese...which i don't read. the kia cooler looks to be about the same dimensions, as long as it sealed to the block (correct diameter) and wasnt too tall, all you would need is the correct extension to be able to bolt it down and thread a filter onto it. biggrin.gif

well you can always find or have made the extender for it. the only fitting questions are diameter and the height. might put the filter too far out towards your exhaust. less of an issue for the 5sfe though.
