well, i bought my rotors, and pads for the rear brakes and today was the first chance i had to get to them.
got the caliper off, got the pads out. but then... couldn't seem to get the rotor off of the wheel studs! i had some honda friends help me out. i guess the rotor has two screw holes you need to use to take off the rotor? we got the rotor nearly off the studs, but it looked like something was holding it on there. it looks like a "drum in hat" type system. im just wondering how to get it off without having to pry at it. i've done brakes on my mustang and my familys minivan and some other fords. thats about it. never had to mess with a "drum in hat" style. anyway, are the 96' celica gt rear brakes "drum in hat" style? and also.. are anyone else's calipers made by mitsubishi? (found that kinda funny too lol) |

(found that kinda funny too lol) In the GT the rear discs have drums. they are the emergency brakes. AKA parking brake. Easiest way to remove is unlock the parking brake . Yeah i found out the hard way to. Make sure the pads did not get damages, and clean thoroughly... -------------------- Learned a lot in 10 years... when i was trying to take off the rotors i didn't have the e-brake on. are you saying i should have disconnected the cable? and what about the shoes? i work at Napa, and i didn't see any rear shoes listed in the system.

gt's dont use shoes they use pads. it wasnt this hard to get mines off. dont ask my how and why i took my rotors off on all 4 sides. i just wanted to play with my car.
if you work at napa dont you have a repair book for the 6gc??? i got mines from a napa........ but then again i live like a bazillion miles away in the middle of the pacific ocean. it shouldnt be hard at all......... -------------------- I don't normally drive fast, but when I do its on a curvy section of this island

well, ill be sure to get one now. but if the gt has drum brakes in the rotor specifically for the e brake it must have shoes... right?

take the rubber plug out of the rotor
rotate the assembly so the hole is at the bottom adjust the ebrake by spinning the wheel / cog i hope that helps. |

You know, I just did this last weekend, replaced all rotors but one (upper calliper bolt seized, had to take off whole assy to remove....sucked) I had to use 12mm (i think) bolts to remove the rotor. Pop them in and turn each, one at a time. I ran into the same problem, it was loose but didnt come off, then I remembered to put the parking brake down. As far as shoes you shouldnt need them for the parking brake (unless its really that bad). It should really come right off with the bolts.

i did the same thing... But i actualy got the rotor off and halfway back on till i thought about it
but with the parking break down, it should slide right off... and if it is down, then you may have a problem back there... Rear disc brakes on Toyotas have shoes as well as pads. The emergency brake is a drum brake inside the rotor. They're usually a dealer only item, they don't sell enough for aftermarket companies to make them. You sir are 100% correct. Sometimes the edge of the drum is rusty, and catches on the shoes, or the shoes might be misadusted a bit, or worn/damaged. Make sure you turn the cog the correct way, so the shoes retract inward. Don't force the rotor off or you risk damaging those shoes. They're not cheap. Don't forget to readjust them out when you reinstall, or you won't have any E brake. -------------------- |
