So I was driving home a little while ago, and just about hit another deer. That would have made number 3 to take out one of my Celicas... Good thing it changed it's mind. Deer fear me!!! They know that I mean business, and that I WILL hit them. But that's off topic. Anyway, nearly hitting this deer made me think about totalling out another Celica, which made me wonder about crash test ratings for the hundredth time. I've Googled it and can't find them anywhere. Does anybody on here know how the 6th Gen scored or where I could find out?

to be honest, it HAS TO be DAMN GOOD, i hit another car head on going about 50. and they had to be going about 40, i had no airbags, and im just fine! THEY were the ones injured (or say they were) not to mention i had a whole different motor in the car that STILL held up and is running fine!

I only wish mine still had the owner's manual... Much less a brochure to come with it. I find Japanese brochures on Ebay all the time, but those don't help me out a whole lot since I can't read Japanese.

That was actually fairly helpful. I'd imagine the 7th Gen was safer than the 6th Gen, but then again, you guys all know what happens when you assume.

Hahahahahahahaha if I had the money, I'd do that for you. If I could buy a vert, I'd be all over it, assuming I could keep my hatchie too biggrin.gif

You know, I don't doubt it. I hit one deer in my old red ST (I miss that car- it was babied. Oil change every 2,500 before I got it, detailed once a week, garaged, carpet so clean you could eat off of it- can't cry over lost cars though.) It hit the front right corner of the car when I was going 40. It blew both airbags immediately but the seatbelts did their job and locked up so I never had to touch the airbag. I've taken the doors off of my pars car and they have a large rod going through the door. Plus they are surprisingly heavy. To look at them, you'd think something would tear right through them and get to you if you ever got hit, but having seen the inside of the door and lifted them, I feel a bit safer.

Nonetheless, I'm still curious exactly how our cars scored. No big deal if I never find out, just curious.

i hate how the dam passenger airbag is so freaking close to the front windshield that it pretty much shatters the glass no matter what.

Yeah, I know... Toyota should put a warning on there that says "Some Glass Included." The airbag alone is around $2,000 to replace if I remember correctly, plus you get to throw in another coule hundred for the windshield.

The strange thing is, in my ST hatch, it destroyed the windshiel when the airbag blew. But in my ST coupe that I parted out, the airbag never touched thw windshield. Is the coupe windshield different from the hatch?

All I know is I'd rather not be in the passenger seat when the airbag blows.

I may be incorrect on this, but I believe that the degree of intensity with which an airbag blows varies according to the degree of impact - the airbag sensors regulate this. So it's possible that the airbag didn't deploy with as much force/intensity in your coupe than in your hatch if perhaps you were going at a lower rate of speed, or possibly depending on where the point of impact was.

Also, I think you can disconnect the passenger airbag by unplugging the connector that's mounted to the underneath of the passenger seat. Disconnecting it will not throw any codes or make your airbag warning light come on, either. I can't say the same for the driver's side airbag, although I would never want to disconnect it anyway.

Hmm... That's true. I didn't think about that. I hit that deer in my car when I was going 45- no time to hit the brakes or anything. Jason (the guy who owned and wrecked my parts car) was going 30 and hit his brakes before rear-ending a truck. So my impact was worse than his.

As far as the poor passenger goes, I won't let anyone ride in my car without buckling up. Our cars are just too small to risk it. Disconnecting the airbag has it's pros and cons... On the plus side, if I just did something small like hit another deer, the passenger wouldn't have to worry about an airbag full of glass shards in their face. However, if a drunk driver comes out of nowhere and gets me, I'd want an airbag- glass shards or not.

When I went looking for this it was like every site I found information about crash ratings would have all of these cars except the Toyota celica would have data for everything up to 1993 and then pick back up at 2000. It was as if, site after site, somebody was trying to erase the ratings for the 6th gen celica.
I finally found some tests from the NHTSA National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. They have two tests for a 1996 and a 1997 ST.
