I just noticed a picture of another 6g with a different setup then mine, so I'm wondering: Did Toyota use more than one setup for the 6g?
Mine (96 vert) has square nuts welded to the inner side of the trunk sheetmetal. The license plate bolts (machine thread, maybe 6mm) pass through a hole in the license plate garnish panel, then screw into this nut. The tip of the bolt is visible inside the trunk (if you remove the fuzzy trunk dressup panel). But I saw a picture of another 6g that has plastic inserts, the type commonly used on many cars. They take sheetmetal screws. Does anyone know if both of these are stock setups? |

Could be that yours is different since you have a vert. I'm not sure, but that's just a guess. I didn't think to look when I still had the couple, but I have a hatchback and it sounds more like the second setup you described.
