Hello, sorry if this has been asked before but I really need some help with this. I've had a whine for about 2 - 3 months now but just recently it began to be really loud, as I accelerate theres a loud whine that increases with RPM's. Do you guys have any suggestions on what this could be? Thanks for any help in advance!
- Also it happens all the time not just when the car is cold. This post has been edited by Vibe: Jan 2, 2009 - 12:18 AM |

I havnt changed either belt since I got the car in '03, is it possible for them to get tighter as it gets older?

Check the belt on the underside for cracks...glazing..just basic signs of it being warn out...If it looks worn out you need to buy a new belt..Normally when a belt squeals its either tightened wrong or it needs replaced..

^ if it's a whine coming from your speakers, you need a ground loop noise filter inline with your audio cables and it will fix your problem.
but if it's coming from the engine, it can be a number of things.. quite possible that the idler or tensioner pulleys are damaged. -------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |

Belts dont get tighter as they get older and belts squeal when they get loose, they dont really whine. The idler or tensioner pulleys is the first really legitimate possibility thats been mentioned so far, a belt being the cause in this situation would be so far out in left field its ridiculous. But let me ask, are you guys just scared to get into the possibility of a transmission issue, is that why everybody wants to keep mentioning belts?

belts can whine when loose, especially timing belts. they flap and shake at high frequency creating the noise.
but i'll agree that its probably a bad bearing somewhere on an accessory or tensioner. -------------------- |

QUOTE Bitter Posted Today, 03:45 PM belts can whine when loose, especially timing belts. they flap and shake at high frequency creating the noise. but i'll agree that its probably a bad bearing somewhere on an accessory or tensioner. Every timing belt ive ever had come into the dealership that was loose was rattling because they hit the timing cover. The timing belt will whine when it is too tight because it puts excessive stress on the idler and tensioner pulleys. -------------------- Trust me, I do this every day |
