Just wanted to get conversation going on the gt4 stock vs a st205 with turbo added. At the risk of sounding like a complete idiot I am new to all the engine work and differences between the 6th gen celicas.

My real question is can a stock st205 ever compete with the power and all wheel drive system of the gt4, even if you add a turbo? Or what would you have to do (costings also in mind) to the st205 for it to even compare...or could it?

Sorry if my ignorance offends die hard celica fans. Im just trying to work out my options of buying a gt4 or buying a st205 and putting the money into it to improve performance.

cheers

i'm sorry - i couldn't help but giggle when reading this --

ST205 stock has factory turbo. cause an ST205 comes from a GT4.

I think you meant a USDM celica that has a swapped 3rd gen 3sgte engine can beat a stock GT4 or not. If the USDM also has a swapped rear subframe for 4wd then it should be identical if not near 100% to stock GT4 specs.

AWD will beat a swapped USDM 3s any day i believe.

depends. a st204 (celica gt) swapped with a 3sgte fwd would be a very close race a stock gt4 might even lose.
stock for stock it would be close due to weight.
awd is good off the line other than that its more weight in a straight line race.

if you can, just buy the gt-four.

ya, i was told that if they had the same engine, the fwd would beat the awd for two reasons:
a) it is lighter (by over 200 lbs apparently)
b) less power is lost when being transferred to the wheels, so while they have the same bhp, the fwd has more whp

i myself am not too sure about this
how many fail wheel drive vehicles do you see winning races at the track?
remember that guy HARDTARGET with the fastest 6th gen ever?
it was fwd and it was running a 9.5 sec 1/4 mile
then he converted it to rwd and ran a 7.8 sec 1/4 mile

i don't know how you guys with 300hp and fwd keep traction
i guess with lsd and drag radials it might help
but i have a NA 5sfe and i am always spinning tires

so ya, i would also go for the gt-four if possible, because i still think awd is better

depends on the type of race. Drag... Swapped GT would win because it ways less and other factors AWD would create.
If you ever like to turn... the GT4 would win because it'll handle so much better and will be faster out of the turns.

I don't know from experience but that is what I understand would happen. If someone wants to prove me wrong go ahead. Personally I like to Turn once in a while. wink.gif

You need better tyres, clearly

QFT.

from a roll, a swapped FWD owns. less weight, less drivetrainloss = win.

from a stop, the '4 owns. AWD launch = win.

fail wheel drive

haha. gold.

stock for stock from a standing start the 4 will win, from a reasonable roll on (say 60 km/h and faster the pov pack with 3s-gte will win.

Takes more skill to get the "fail wheel drive" to get a good take off, where as with awd just flatten it and drop the clutch and you dissapear into awesomeness. The trick for young players here in the fwd if you give it too many berries too early you'll wheelspin and the four would pull back in front again, especially if you dont have an lsd.

the more power they make the better the gt-four's advantage can be utilised.

well that certainly got conversation going! even if it was at my expense!! lol

thanks for all the input, i have heard alot of people telling me different things in terms of power to weight ratio

i guess to further my interest is to ask is it possible to 'do up' a standard 6th gen cel engine so it competes with the gt4 for the same cash...

ie. price of gt4 vs price of standard cel plus upgrades...does that make sense? like does it equal or am i wasting money on the standard cel?

Get the GT-4. If for no other reason than to make us over in the US jealous. Theres no way to describe how a 4 launches until you've experienced it, and once you have you're hooked. On the drag strip they'd be nearly identical but on a track the 4 would own.

yea trust me.. if a GT4 was available in the US.. there would be wayyyyyy more people driving GT4s then drving a swapped GT.. swapped 3s has some advantages.. but overall the winner is GT4.. the only experince I have driving a 4..was when I took a WRX STI 4 a spin.. amazing stuff.. imagine a GT4.. dude if you dont buy that GT4 ill fly to aus and buy it for you
