I had a dry and wet compression test done on my engine to determine whether or not the block is worthy to keep with my head build. My mech called me and read the specs for the dry test: 210 / 225 across the board. The wet test was different: 210/220, 210/250, 210/240, and 225/250. He said rebuild specs are 280/300 so I am not too bad he said. He also mentioned something like only replacing what the head 'needs' and not everything because it might not be good to run the new fully rebuilt head's compression on the original block which has 177,000 on it. I do have a SRI, header, hi-flow cat, and exhaust muffler on the car now. Any comments or concerns????

umm....those #'s are very high.
and his rebuild specs are wayy high. what exactly are you planning on doing to the head? the only thing that will create more compression with the head is milling it and or block to do so(short of reshaping the combustion chamber), or using a thinner headgasket, so im not really sure what exactly he is talking about. -------------------- Former Team 5SFTE pro member ;)

I was planning on porting the combustion chamber, do a 4 angel valve job (I know a lot of guys say it shouldn't be done because our head is already at the max but this guy said he can do it and will warranty the work), I was going to shave it for more compression, and port/polish the exhaust ports, plus replace all the internals. What should the numbers be?? I have good and thorough power all throughout the power band except past 5500 rpm (then it kind of loses power). Also, my engine never hesitates or bucks so I think the block is fine. |

Does anyone know what the compression test results should be for the 1996 5sfe 2.2 motor? I had the results above in the initial post and my mech said it's fine, not the best but fine. Presure2 stated the above response and now I am a little confused as to what the numbers should be.

178 is the "normal" compression (your is prolly higher because of carbon deposits)
142 is the minimum with a max of 14psi diffrence between cylinders -------------------- Former Team 5SFTE pro member ;)

I see. So is the carbon deposit ok or what will that do? When the head is removed, that's something the mechanic can clean up since the piston tops will all be right there right? Thanks for the update by the way.
