I was driving on the interstate yesterday and heard the sound of a bolt fall and whack against the car. A couple of miles later when coming to a stop, I heard a thunk and then intense grinding. After inspection, it appears the bolt that secures the caliper to the steering knuckle wiggled itself free. The top of the caliper slid forward and wedged against the rim, grinding and damaging the inside of it. Does anyone know what size this bolt is offhand? Its quite thick.
No work has been done on this part of the car for years, so I'm surprised anything happened. On top of that the tire went flat at the same time....happy friday the 13th indeed Hope someone can help with offhand knowledge - I just moved and my haynes manual is boxed up somewhere. Meanwhile the car isn't drivable. Thank you for any help |

Update: I think its the part number listed below in the diagram: The 47721A
http://www.toyodiy.com/parts/p_U_1994_TOYO....html?hl=47721A I'm guessing I can get this at any hardware store, just not sure of the exact size. |

You can get it at a hardware store, but off the top of my head I dont know what the shear strength of either bolt is (hardware vs oem). Id say just go to the dealer and get the right bolt. If your really hard up to drive, take the same bolt out of the other side and go shopping.

Keep in mind you need millimeter specs for Toyota and not American standard (fractions). Also ask for heat treated thread bolts if possible, Napa has them. Under extreme pressure any non heat treated bolt will slide right off if it's not OEM.

Found the part number from toyotaworld: 90016-AA103 about $.60 for the bolt. I'm going to order it just to make sure I have the right part.
In the meantime, I found a bolt at a local hardware store which should help me get by until the proper part arrives. The bolt that fit was metric, labeled M12-1.25. Narrow threading too, I believe. So if anyone else has this problem in the future and needs a temporary crutch bolt I hope this helps. This thread was helpful: http://www.6gc.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=62283&hl= Thanks also for the suggestions. |
