I just purchased a 96 Celica ST. The previous owner told me the radio will not retain station presets, I figure no big deal I plan on replacing the stereo anyhow. It turns out I have no constant 12 volt power to the radio (blue wire with yel stripe). I’ve replaced all the fuses, under the dash and under the hood, except the big square 30 and 40amp (figured if they were bad more than just the stereo would be affected). All other electronics on the car operate fine, lights, dash, wipers, cig lighter, etc. I've searched the posts for other areas to check.
Any other ideas, before I assume a broken wire and just run a new wire? |

so i guess it's not the stock radio anymore? I'm assuming that someone has tried to change it out and wired it wrong. (for aftermarket radios) There are two wires on the radio that require 12 volts, one is usually yellow, and that is the memory wire, it runs directly to the battery (by way of a fuse and whatever else) and holds the station presets while the car is off, the other is a red wire, and it should be wired to the ignition so the radio knows when the key is turned, and the radio comes on. Most good name brand radios follow these wire colors, black is ground, and green, gray, white, and purple are speakers, blue is accessory on and orange is instrument lights on and off (for night time), BUT, not all radios have these same wire colors, I wish they did, it seems that more and more are following the standard though. If the red and yellow wires are wired backwards then you'll get this problem.
Now, if you just have a stock radio..blue/yellow is memory, gray is ignition, and brown is ground, everything else is speakers, illumination and whatever else. So the blue/yellow wire is where your problem is. Have you checked with a voltmeter if there is voltage at the blue/yellow wire? I was tracing out the wiring in a 98 camry a few months ago, and I believe the wiring on that is the same as the Celica, or at least very similar. There is a big bundle of wires behind the glove box, a lot of plugs and connectors, but I believe the blue/yellow wire isn't in that area, I think it goes toward the fuse box and then to the battery from there. But I could be wrong, it's been over 2 years since I played with the wiring on my Celica. This post has been edited by match220: Jul 29, 2009 - 6:12 AM -------------------- -Jay

you can always rerun the wire once youve pinpointed the problem, maybe its even eaten up a bit.
