Alright so awhile back I decided to ditch the old kenwood deck w/ ballin tape player and 10 disc changer (broken) in the trunk...for this pioneer
here Here is what I want to do. my stock speakers are going. I want to replace the back and the front and at some point later, the tweeters(although they are last on the list) I plan on sound proofing the car with the duct insulation and foam padding, and putting squares of dynamat directly behind the speaker (on the door) I don't want to add any speakers, just replace these ones. My stepdad has a 8in mtx audio sub he has never used (bought 2 and only put one in his truck) and there is a strong chance I can have it. If that happens I would like to put it in, but tuck it. Questions, Do I need an amp? What are some good speakers...better than oem, not bose. Anything is an improvement at this point. would staying pioneer be better? I realize the head unit isn't much, I am not looking for the best sound system, (no trunk full of bass) just something cleaner and quieter that works with what i have, basically, how can i maximize what i have? I don't listen to rap but everything else, seriously, from choirs, to country, rock, classic and new, and especially blues and lots of guitar stuff (bb king, SRV, clapton, mayer, eagles, zz top etc.) Basically if they go to the crossroads guitar festival, I listen to them. thanks in advance (and i am going to read crutchfield for more info) This post has been edited by 97celiman: Nov 23, 2009 - 11:58 PM |

amp would increase highs mids and lows. look into different speakers for prices and best quality. best you can do is research research and do some more research.

Great price, I'd say. I was actually thinking of grabbing them, my stock PS-door speaker is dead and I could definitely go for getting the right-channel back, but alas I'm broke after buying a new bumper and replacing brake-pads (on what was a frozen driver-side caliper piston and completely shot rotors... just sacrificing pads at this point). -------------------- ~Moving on to a 2002 Corolla S~ R.I.P Tom Celica - 1994-2010 |

as for getting an amp you would first have to figure out what speakers you want to get. give me a total cost of what you would like to spend and i can help you find a good system t buy. That cd player only puts out 25w rms per speaker and more require more than that if you want good quality. Do you have premium sound or just single 6 1/2" components in the front. The subwoofer you will definitely need an amp for, subwoofers require more power than most speakers and also in order to only get sub out put you need to run rca to the amp so that only the sub frequencies reach the sub so no interference with highs and mids.

i just have the basic system in the car, no premium sound. which is fine with me.
the sub/amp is really last on the list... i guess a better question would be, what are the best speakers I could get to match my head unit. I am not really looking to upgrade the headunit, mostly i just want the sound back to factory quality/slightly better. i would rather replace tweeters and all 4 speakers than spend on amp and sub, if i remember correctly, the guy said this head unit only had one output for an amp, thats all i would really want anyway. I am not a big car audio junkie (i don't want others to hear my bass just me) nor am i interested in the pimp my ride stuff, just standard upgrade, and what would be the best match for my head unit. I bought it knowing it wasn't that expandable i don't expect it to be. and yes i would love those speakers...working on the money part right now. correct me if i am wrong, the front door speakers on a gt are 8in and the back are 6.5? (w/out premium sound) This post has been edited by 97celiman: Nov 25, 2009 - 1:49 AM |

yes, but you can use a 6-5 for the front, just have to make a bracket, or you could do the 8 inch, but stock it is a 6-5, with the trim around it as an 8 inch

correct me if i am wrong, the front door speakers on a gt are 8in and the back are 6.5? No. They're 6.5's all around, but the fronts have a metal ring around them in order to fit into the 8" space. You need mounting adapters to make 6.5's fit in the front. The rears just swap out. -------------------- '97 ST \ Eibach \ KYB \ Kenwood \ Alpine \ Cusco \ OEM+ [sold 10/18]

If they're shallow enough, I believe you can. I don't think 8" speakers exist anymore, only 8" subs.

Greendemon can attest that making the brackets for the front speakers was kind of a pain in the ass (thanks Aerl!), but once it's done it works like a charm. I'd go the 6.5" route.
As far as an amp, I'm running off the amp that's already in the Celica, and my speakers sound great. Not as great as the JBLs in my Prius, but still very nice. -------------------- |

the ones that malpaso is selling are 8in, they say direct replacement, but I would actually need custom brackets? I don't want custom brackets just plug and play...

8 inch speaker should drop right in, as long as the screw holes line up.

If they're shallow enough, I believe I can. I don't think 8" speakers exist anymore, only 8" subs. Eight-inch speakers still exist, though they are harder to find. Memphis makes a marine speaker in eight-inch (given we're talking doors a marine build isn't a bad idea), Focal has its 210 CA1 (which I'm using and absolutely loving), Partsexpress.com has a wide selection of cheap (and I do mean cheap) eight-inchers, or you can look at madisound.com for a wide variety of eight-inch designs. |

I was in the same boat as you, my front and rear speakers were shot. Tried to find some 8" speakers but had no luck. I went with 6.5" infiniti speakers in my doors and tweeters in the cover over the miror. The brackets were really easy to make, providing you have a jigsaw and drill. I traced out the old speaker on some 1/2" mdf cut it out. When you buy new speakers they will come with a cardbord cut out of the speaker use this to trace out the opening for the new speaker. Drill a pilot hole so you can cut out the middle. Mark and drill the holes from the original speakers and you my friend have just made your self some speaker adapters in about 1/2 hour. I sprayed them black. As far as the tweeter went it was I little more difficult. I got the bigest drill bit I had 1 1/4" and drilled out the mirror cover. It was still too small, so it needed a little fine tuning from the dremel. I also Dynomated my doors and inside the door shell. I have never used the stuff before but it sounds amasing. Good luck with your speaker project.

alright so 6.5 speakers do require a custom bracket...why though if the original speaker is 6.5 also?
and do you have a picture of the brackets? |

alright so 6.5 speakers do require a custom bracket...why though if the original speaker is 6.5 also? Because the OEM speakers have a metal surround that acts as a bracket, and it can't be separated...unless you use a torch or something. -------------------- '97 ST \ Eibach \ KYB \ Kenwood \ Alpine \ Cusco \ OEM+ [sold 10/18]
