huh?? what retainer? i have it either way but i'm not sure what part you are talking about... the boot itself has a plastic ring around the bottom that clips into the shift boot bezel... but theres no extra part?

Use a large ziptie and save yourself the money. Mine got lost somehow and the tie worked fine for years.
