Hey guys, just picked up a 94 gt4, i'm loving it! I've noticed a bit of a humming noise from the left front end of the car. The noise is not related to rpms, or whether the car is moving or not. I can hear it while i'm driving, but it comes on and off periodically if i'm idling. Also, when idling if I open up the hood it appears to be coming from somewhere near the airbox, and sounds as if its some type of auxiliary pump or something. When it goes off, I can rev it up a little, and it usually comes back on. Let me know if this is making any sense at all. Thanks for the input!

I'm having sort of a similar problem on my 5sfe as well. Mine stops at idle (or at least goes to where I can't hear it), I'll push on the gas in neutral and nothing. When I start accelerating, it starts. It doesn't increase in pitch, but it increases in intensity for a little bit, then randomly changes pitch and goes higher. (Random pitch change could not be positively associated with an RPM range) It stays humming on deceleration, and usually stays humming on a neutral coast and stops when the car comes to a complete stop. It's also coming from the same area.

Any ideas?

call toyota and get your flux capacitor replaced

on a serious note, if its a GT4 it MAY be the w2a pump you hear

A little more info for mine. The only thing I found that it correlates to is the AC. When its on it makes noise. When it's off it still makes noise, just less loudly...

Hmmm, interesting. I have the GT4, so it would seem that it could be this w2a pump. However, it sounds very similar to what lilgreen is describing with his gt, so it might be something that is common between both of them. I was wondering if it was associated with the A/C but i'm not convinced. It really does sound like a pump of some sort to me. I can't find a search function on this forum, but what is the w2a pump?? Is is an auxiliary pump for the intercooler?

To add to what lilgreen said, the sound almost always stops when you come to a full stop and idle for a little bit, ie over 10 - 20 seconds, and I can get it to come back if i rev her up a bit at idle.

Any ideas guys? Is it normal to hear a certain amount of noise from that pump?

unless you have an aftermarket pump, you shouldn't be able to hear it inside the car at all, maybe your pump is on its way out, thus making that noise, the pump is right under the battery, you can access it by taking the wheel off on the pass side of your GT4 ( driver side for us.

Jack the car and take the wheel off, with the car in NEUTRAL and the EBRAKE on, let it idle until the pump comes on, if it's the pump you'll know right away.

Yeah, in my case, my best guess is my compressor is on its way out. I think I was just sort of imagining things when I'd turn the system off. It doesn't make noise when the A/C light is NOT lit. But when it is, it makes the noise as stated before, and now the belt is chirping, but only when the compressor is on. Anyone have a P/N for a 5sfe compressor?
