So when I usually drive my car, I usually have the sunroof tilted up. The other day I went to tilt it up as usual and the motor started to wind, but all I heard was a loud grinding noise. No movement of the sunroof at all. I tried sliding the sunroof back but when I pushed that button, it tilted up. Once it tilted all the way up, the motor started to make the grinding noise again until I released the slide button. I thought that the motor must have been going bad. I just want to make sure that it is the motor that has gone wrong before I shell out for another one. Also, sometimes when I press the tilt button, nothing happens. I'm 90% sure that the motor is shot, but I thought I'd ask the 6GC pro's just to confirm. If anyone could help me out, please do.

-Thanks for your time, Ryan

More specifically, I think it's a gear(s) slipping inside the motor. I have the same issue and I've just gotten used to not using my sunroof. I tried taking the headliner off to take a look at it, but the material is held in by a metal surround and it seems that it can only be taken off once, so I left it alone. I'm not sure if the motor can be taken apart though, so it's either potentially replacing a gear or replacing the motor.

If the sunroof ever gets stuck, grab a hairdryer and heat up the track, then give the glass a gentle push while you're holding the retract button.

I'd still take off your headliner and poke around. I'm fairly certain that my sunroof isn't OEM, which is why it might be installed differently. I think the OEM Toyota system allows you to take off your headliner.

And no worries mang. thumbsup.gif

Another possibility is that both of our tracks are somehow messed up. My motor does work because it can push the sunroof up (and down as well, with a bit of help), so it could also be that the glass is getting stuck somewhere. I've poked around there as well but I can't see anything that could cause it to get stuck.

Our sunroofs work with cables similar to the power windows, just tougher to get to! Just follow these steps and you can fix anything on it!

9 out of 10 times you have a stripped gear in the motor, it happened to me. The motor has three gears, the outer are metal and the middle is plastic, made to break. Just buy a new motor for around 40 bucks off here or fleebay. Takes about 15 min to take sunroof out, it a heavy bitch, I think the bolts are 17 and 12mm, but I cant remember.

Shops are ridiculously priced as soon as you mention sunroof problems.
