I have had this particular problem with my Celica for a while and finally got time to fix it (tried anyway):
When I open the driver's side door the dome light comes on and when I close the door it goes off. Like it should.
The passenger's side will never come on. On the other hand the trunk light is always on (had to remove light bulb in order to not drain my battery).

I have ordered two brand new pin switches from dealer but it didn't fix the problem. I even tried switching driver's with passenger's to eliminate bad switch.
The result is still the same.

Does anybody know what's wrong and how to fix this annoying issue?

So when your passenger side door is open or closed, the all the lights stay on?

My passenger side is always off regardless the door position. I can turn it on by flipping the dome switch (so I know it works).
Trunk is always on.

so when you have the interior light switched to the turn on when the door's open spot, is the light on constantly? Even when the doors are closed?

When the interior switch is turned to "turn on when door open" it is always off. Regardless if the passenger's door is open or closed.
Simply: if you open passenger's door it never comes on.

Wait, so your interior lights don't turn on at all when you open the passenger door, but the light in the hatch is constantly on? (unless you switch it off)

That is correct, except I have ST coupe, so it's technically trunk, not hatch.

Ok well either way you have a light back there lol tongue.gif

But to be honest, I have not a clue. That is very weird, you might have a short somewhere within the system kindasad.gif

I'm afraid you are right. Electrical issues are a b!tch to find...
Anybody else have an idea where I should start looking?

Check your fuse.

If I remember correctly, the trunk light has a switch for on/off.

I would think that dome light would be on one fuse (works for driver's side not passenger's)?
Also, where would be the switch located?

It would be good just to check your fuses. I remember I had to replace a fuse because ALL of my interior lights didn't work. And the on/off switch should be where the light is. I'm going to go start my Celica in this cold winter so I'll check and get back to you sir.

I stand corrected. The trunk light should have on/off right next to it.

I'm still having a very similar problem with mine. Pass door turns on key ring and map light but not courtesy lights and driver's door don't turn anything on at all. Trunk light is off too but that could just be dead bulb. I messed up the courtesy light on the passenger door myself and I figure it could be some switches or something on the other but it doesn't seem so. I'm almost on the verge of just rewiring the whole light system with new fuses. Ugh... which won't work with my luck kindasad.gif

I'm watching this thread now so if you get anywhere I'd love to know. And if I figure anything out I'll see if i can be of help. Good luck bra
