hello all. I have a 1996 camry. Recently the tranny has been taking a **** on me, poppin out of gear and other random ****. The motor has 212k on it so I figure it is time for a swap. I also drive a nissan and one of the guys from nico said this to be a very helpful sight. He said twin turbo mr2 motor, that it fits my car with a celica tranny. Is this true? And are there any other swaps that could be fitted to my car. Also car must smog( cali sucks balls for smogging)(wich prolly rules out twin turbo but still) Thanks guys, for any help you can give.

#1, there is no twin turbo MR-2. IF you would tell us what engine you had stock, it would help.

If you have a 4 cyl Camry then you probably have a 5SFE. You can swap any S series motor(2nd part of the engine code, ie 5SFE, 3SFE, 3SGE, 3SGTE...) without too much hassle(wiring will be the main concern).

The highest horse motor would be the 3SGTE(2.0 Turbo, MR2 turbo or Celica GT-4/Alltrac motor). Then comes the 3SGE(UK/Japan Celica SS-II/SS-III motor).

If you have the 6 cyl Camry, they will fit, but you would have to mess with engine mounts/axles/transmission.

I couldn't help with specifics, but since the last post was just sarcastic I thought I'd offer some info to help get you in the right direction.

If I were you, I would sell your Camry and buy a V6 Camry. The V6 Camry has the 1MFZE, which has about 200 horsepower. There is also a supercharger made for this engine to put the horsepower at around 240. A V6 Camry would most likely be less expensive than a engine and transmission swap and in the end it has the ability to produce more power.

I disagree with that.. granted it would be easier to by a new car than swap in a new motor.. but that charger is gonna be somewhere around 2.5-3.5k now thats not very cheap.. and for only a 40hp gain.. thats not money well spent.. 2.5-3.5k spend modding a 3sgte with 200ish baseline HP is gonna see alot more Hp than 240hp.

If you have the 4clyinder which you probably do. I would recommend the 3sgte swap if your looking for power. There are sites online that will help you with that motor into your car - just keep in mind that all swaps are done differently buy you will find alot of good info out there to help you along the way biggrin.gif

otherwise there is plenty of info right here for ya!

Enjoy the site

The car is a four cyl auto(5SFE). I wouldn't mind putting the original motor back in it, but I havn't found any importers that stock or sell this motor. If I couldn't find the original motor I would definatly be looking at the 3sgte. Any idea's on how difficult the swap could be? I would like to do it my self as long as there is little to no fabricating.

how does your auto tranny pop out of gear?

the swap will cost you money and time. the engine fits in but every swap is different and different problems may come up.

also, for you, you will have to do a tranny conversion

wiring is a bitch

do a search for 3sgte here and on celica.net, you will find plenty of information.

Personally, if I were in this situation, I would go with the V6 for a few reasons. I'm going to assume that the 3S-GTE that would be bought would be a ST185 so both engines would have around 200 hp.

1. First of all, the tranny in the current Camry is crap so that would have to be swapped out also.
2. The 3S-GTE that would have to be bought wouldn't be legal since the Camry is a 1996 so the two options are a 1991-1995 MR2 engine or a JDM motor. Neither of which are the same year or newer as the Camry.
3. The swap is a very difficult process that would take a long amount of time to complete and might come along with unseen troubles. (As has been seen by a few members on this board.)
4. The 1MFZE has the same amount of power while it is not turbocharged, therefore, the 1MFZE would most likely be more reliable and last longer.
5. The current Camry that has the blown 5S-FE can probably be sold for about $1800. Another 1996 V6 Camry can be bought for about $5800 with less than 100k miles on it. The difference in these costs would probably equal the total cost of swapping the 3S-GTE, without the hassle.

Most of these points were made with an economic point of view rather than performace. Personally, I feel that 200 hp is good enough. (Considering the 5S-FE only has 135...)

Agreed. Any ideas where I could get a decent price on a original ( 5s-fe ) block and tranny?

I'm not saying keep the Camry that you have. I think that you should sell your current Camry and buy the V6 version. The 1MFZE is a really nice engine that delivers a lot of power and has about the same mpg as the 5S-FE (It has better mpg once you get a 1999 or newer.). The 1MFZE makes me horny...

http://www.car-part.com/

If you want the 5S-FE (and tranny if you want one), but im still thinking that you're going to want to go with just getting a V6 Camry.
