Ok - we've thought about doing this for quite some time now. Old coupe parts car, hitting the dirt track... with an EVENTUAL beams in the engine bay.

Just some love...

Terribly rusted bumper and bumper mounts

Redneck Car Lift

While in the air we dropped the exhaust and the gas tank and examined the under body. It looks surprisingly GOOD! The shock towers are solid, not rusted. The shocks seem to work, and the rear subframe is for the most part in tact. A removal, sand blast, lube up, and a good painting will make it really smooth for full racecar adjustment.

Back to the interior...

And finally...

Dash Out

And Finally again.... doors and fenders off as well, as well as all glass, no gas tank, no dash, only pedals

No - Just a really rusty beater that barely ran that I picked up for about 400$ about a year and a half ago.
I used the airbag parts and windshield out of it after I hit a deer, sold a bunch of parts off of it to make back some of my money on it, and it's sat there ever since.
The rusty rear bumper mounts broke off when we tugged on the rear towing hook to pull it out of its parking spot.

It spent many a winter in Cleveland

Motor in the red car had a blown soft plug from sitting all winter with nothing but water in the motor and cracked radiator. At 200k, it was time to come out anyway...... Ok rewind a little bit, and we find that I have plans for a BEAMS in this car to DOMINATE the track.... but as to not go in there and win or come close in my first week, I'm electing to slide in under the radar with 5s power for a few weeks... and then BEAMS THE H*LL OUT OF THEM! LOL

So this 5s power.... where is it coming from. Why the spot where all of my other parts have come from 6gc and my friends Richee3 and Celicasaurus...

We begin with a CLEAN 162xxx k mile 5s with a TORCHED automatic tranny.

2 hours worth of work....

Redneck engine hoist

Evidence of TORCHEDNESS

The separation...

The inside of the tranny bell housing

The motor sits right now with the torque converter off, the flex plate off, and awaiting the MT flywheel and other assorted bolts before being mounted to a spare subframe and being installed via the bottom like I do all my motor pulls and swaps... Only way to do it if you can leave the car still and don't need it "rolling" IMHO

All for today... maybe more tomorrow - maybe some RHD building... just depends on what I want to do

What? Torched? I don't k ow what you're talking about... That tranny was never the victim of any neutral bombing! laugh.gif Looking great, Trace! I'm curious to know how the 5S feels pulling a Celica with no weight. Quick question, are you going to be welding the diff in your trans or leaving it open?

Trans will be welded or LSD'd ... if it looks like we can get some good $ out of the lsd tranny, it'll be welded. And as long as it's under 5s power, it'll def be welded.

I think Turnip prefers a welded diff over his factory S54 with limited slip. Seems like I remember him saying the difference in the final drive (a difference of only .02) was the difference between him topping out and getting passed on the straights or being able to keep pulling and accelerating. However, the BEAMS ECU is limited to 180 km/hr, which I can do in 4th gear so he must have a speed cut defender. It's worth asking him about.

That really only applies to his track. My tracks are going to be different lengths and everything, no way to really tell until you drive it. Welded differentials though put heavy wear on the axles if there are too many tight turns.

From the other day.
Forgot to post

After some sand blasting....
kinda rusty in the rocker panels, but the frame and suspension towers are all solid. Some welding is needed on the subframe also found via sand blasting... but very fixable.

Also purchasing maf adapter....

There will be no side skirts lol - it'l get some some sheet metal welded on on the way down the side... *maybe lol* and then painted.... maybe red... maybe black.

I'm thinking black since the engine is gonna have a little bit of color to it wink.gif if you get my drift

It's free, just have to drive to the spots via the spectator maps on the website. It tells you what time you need to be there and how to get there. Also you can walk around the service area and see the cars before the rally starts. I will say that last year this rally was a cluster****. However they brought on some good people and it should be much better organized than last year.... especially as far as spectating.

It's not a national rally so none of the top guys will be there, but there will still be plenty of fast guys/cars.

Just kidding. I see that you're going to be welding a panel on there instead of having an actual door.

In regards to LSD vs weld. I recommend welding as it's Just plain better on the dirt. After 3 celicas an 5 years of racing on the dirt there is no comparison as Welded trans will outperform LSD. The one caveat is each tracks rules. Some say no welded. However most tracks don't check or even care to enforce the rules. I have run some very small tracks an ur concerns in regards to tight turns r valid for a welded diff but even the 1/4 mile tracks r not an issue. Key is tires an suspension. The super strut is great but not worth the headache. The unreliability is a fact. If I get thru this season without a wheel coming off I will be surprised. It was good to test it out but going back to stock cause I need parts an finding them will be an issue an not worth the expense. Sorry I have been MIA. Will post up some pics soon an give me a call with any questions. I have built 3 of these an can give u a lot of pointers. Maybe we can race at Tyler county next spring.

If you're going to be at TYLER COUNTY i will most def be there. That's like an hour from my house. Where in general are you coming from?

But thanks for the heads up on the welded. I wouldn't have thought the difference would have been that much. Post up some pics of how your car looks.. Inside... outside.... fuel cell...we're trying to figure out what all we're gong to do with this one... make it look like a late model maybe LOL

The tracks around here say that welded differentials are allowed... so I think I"m good there.

Sounds good on racing in the spring at Tyler County. I race at all around western PA and Western MD.

I will round up some pics but if you pull my old build thread you can see the cage install. We have been using the same cages for the other cars. I fabricated a trick quick disconnect for the steering wheel retaining the stock steering wheel and I recommend retaining the power steering vs eliminating it. Only run OEM axles....rebuilds from advanced will last about one race. Im running stock fuel tank vs a fuel cell.

I've just had a thought. I know the BEAMS and 5S use the same 190 lph fuel pump, but considering how much time you will spend at WOT or at least above 50% throttle, you might consider a new fuel pump. I know the stock fuel pump takes a second to build pressure back up, so a newer fuel pump might not be a bad thing. Low fuel pressure is never a good thing. Of course, I'm sure you've already thought of this since you're two steps ahead of me

The cage is looking great! I'd love to make it up to the race between you two. Keep me updated and I'll check my schedule!

been working on late model racecar.
been working on Kia sportage.
been working on RHD car.
DD lhd celica has broken timing belt I haven't gotten to yet.

Aside from having the BEAMS for this motor kinda tore down on the timing side with a few exceptions and some small patching on the above subframes done. Progress has been minimal. But I've been collecting parts gradually. Bought a Walbro 190 lph inline fuel pump for racing fuel cell. So we're getting there. If I could ever just dedicate a weekend I could probably get the thing on it's wheels at least. Just too many cars to work on right now that all broke down at the same time kindasad.gif

lmfao. Actually yeah. He's been working on his late model, turnip has his racecar for sale, and I delivered the timing belt to the motor last weekend. So the motor saw its timing belt for the first time. that's the thing that needs done along with the RHD car. Will likely find a couple weekends as soon as he empties the garage of seasoning lumber and knock it out....

basically have to wait until the fork lift can navigate in the shop aka wood gotta go.

Finally got the bastard crank pulley bolt broke loose. Had to get very creative. Was also very lucky.

How tight are these things 300 ft lb? my god.

Next time I'm out at the shop we'll get the timing belt actually changed and all bearings inspected so I have 'some' confidence in the fact that when racing it'll all stay together.

I had to put bot axles in the tranny, the engine is still strapped to its shipping pallet, I then put pipe wrenches on the axles and ratchet straps around the axles to tie them to the pallet to prevent them from picking up, then I had the 6 pt socket on the bolt head and a 2-3 ft cheater bar and almost my whole weight before it creaked.

unreal.

Moral of the story. ALWAYS use the starter motor method when possible

Checked everything on the timing side of the motor today. Didn't find anything worth replacing. Buttoned it back up. Time to strap it to a sub frame.
