Hey, I'm likely going to be buying a celica in the next week or so, but one concern I have with it is that the motor was replaced with a "30,000 mile" motor. I know from when I was trying to find an engine for the celica I used to have, that most places just sold a 3sfe instead of the 5sfe, so I was wondering if there was any way I could tell if this car I'm buying has a 3s or 5s? It's got the 5s intake manifold and valve cover for sure, but I figure those could just be bolted onto a 3s. Is there any other sure-fire way to tell which engine it's got? Thanks in advance smile.gif

If it has a 5S intake manifold and valve cover I'd think it a 5S-FE. Ehh, should be an identifying number on the block somewhere.

That's what I was thinking but I think the 5s manifold and valve cover bolt to the 3s, so if someone were just swapping the long block they could've just re-used the 5s stuff. I can't recall ever seeing a block identification number or vin number anywhere on the block last time I had a 5s out of the car, but that was several years ago.

^ I'm pretty sure the 3s can be run off the 5s ecu though, so even if it's got a 5s ECU it could still be a 3s.

Don't know then. Should be some kind of marker on the block. I really don't foresee someone swapping in a 3S, then making it look like a 5S.

just ask what CC the engine is. If it's not a 2200, then it's not a 5s
Or what liter the engine is, which the 5s is a 2.2L

my engine has a VIN tag on the bottom down by the oil pan next to the trans, if that hasn't been removed you can see what type of vehicle it belongs to and go from there

That's the car I'm looking to get. To me, everthing looks to be 5s, but i just wanted to know if there was a way to find out for sure

5SFE, california emissions specification, not Federal emissions. Yours has an extra O2 sensor and an external ignition coil, among other things different.

Wow, if it wasn't for the pinstripe, I'd say that's the first ever dealer-like 6GC I've seen.

Bought the car yesterday and after inspecting for a while I noticed that stamped on the driver's side of the block, right below the head, it's stamped "5s" smile.gif

^ Thanks, the exterior is SUPER clean, I think I counted only 1 ding in the entire car! The interior needs the driver's front leahter seat redone and the passenger rear seat back, but other than that the thing is is awesome shape. I'll be making a thread about this car in the project section soon after I get some good pictures of it smile.gif
