Since its not installed, the easiest way to check is to look where the axles sit in the trans. If there's a thin bar and you can see through to the other side, it's an open diff. Yours looks like it has LSD.
Edit: how many miles are on the trans? Yes. The first picture is my S54 with an open diff, the second picture is my S54 with LSD.
![]() ![]() With 90,000 miles on the transmission, I'd be worried about the health of that LSD. Helical LSD's wear out and start acting like an open diff between 60-90,000 miles. Sticking it with your 3S may be just a minor upgrade without refreshing the differential. Luckily, you'll be opening up the trans to replace the syncros anyway. helical LSD: behave like an open diff when one wheel is totally unweighted, but "never" wear out, and generally are quieter and have easier driveability
Clutch type LSDs wear out. Gear-type LSD don't. Their only "wear" is a failure that breaks the gears. -------------------- 1993 Celica GT Coupe - sold

on the chassis plate in the engine bay - non usa though
the Japanese/nz new ST204 are S54-02A, so I'd assume it would be the same -------------------- |
