Fog Don't Come on Unless Headlights are On...???, Stock '97 Vert Options

The owner's manual says they should come on when the tail lights are turned on (guess they mean parking lights ), but will only come on with the low beam headlights on as well. They go back off when the high beams are switched on. Is this normal for a U.S. Celica?

Yes, this is normal.

Every Toyota I've seen is like that. I've driven a few other vehicles that could have fog lights without the headlights but not a Toyota.

My fogs are on only when I have ONLY my low beams on. If I switch it to parking lights or Hi beams. The fog light will turn/stay off.

You can run a relay to your parking lights if you want them on without your headlights on (city light style). They will stay on with the high beams too. You should see my front end when all the lights are on lmao

I like the relay idea! Beside my '96 Jeep Grand Cherokee, this is the only vehicle I've owned with fog lights. I was under the impression that fog lights used in actual fog worked best without any headlights, high or low beam. I could be wrong, but won't know until I run some sort of relay for the Celica. We do have lots of fog here right now, and this coming week could be very foggy.

Jurisdictions which required daytime running lights -- which didn't include the US at the time -- used the fog lights. These cars, which included those in Canada, turn the parking and fog lights on with the engine; activating the headlights turn the fogs off unless you had the fog light switch depressed.

That's why the "fog" lights are at the lowest part of the bumper on most cars cause lighting up the road at the lowest point helps you the best with your vision, in fog. That's why they disengage the fogs when the high beams are turned on. Toyota has ALWAYS set the fogs to turn on ONLY when the high beams are engaged. I don't know why, but that's their protocol.

I'll agree with this as well, it has always been the way Toyota operates fogs.

I personally like them to come on with at least the parking lights. Mine also stay on with the low beams and high beams, but I've been considering making them come on only with parking and low, and turn off with high beams.

No, it is right the way I stated. I know it may sound unorthodox, but high beams aren't supposed to be used in fog. High beams light up higher than fogs, hence the name high beams. Fog lights focus on the lower part of the road cause, essentially, that's the part of the road where is most visible in fog!

Us regulations seems way different then euro. Here we can switch on the fogs the moment we turn our parking lights on. They will work with low beams on and even with high beams on too.
