Hi everybody,
I'm pretty much a noob when it comes to tuning engines to increase speed/horsepower. I have a 94 Celica GT with a 5sfe engine. I want to increase the power but I'm not looking for power that a turbo or supercharger would give. I just want to increase the horsepower by as much possible without turning to a turbo or supercharger. Basically. I just want the Celica to run a bit faster. So my question is: What do I need in order to increase the horsepower/torque of my 5sfe engine without looking into turbos or superchargers? My starting point is exhaust headers but I don't know what else i could get. Thanks! This post has been edited by RyuCelica: Oct 11, 2013 - 8:42 AM |

you mean you have a 5SFE right?
not a 5SFTE. A 5SFTE is a turbo'd 5SFE. More power for the 5S Web or Colt Cams -------------------- 1995 GT::::Diffusing the Situation エキサイティングカーレーシングチーム! march 2010 COTM : 6GC feature 2014 : january 2015-2016-2018 COTM |

If I'm going to spend a couple thousand, then I rather do an engine swap and get turbo. I'm just looking to see how I can increase the power without doing too much modifications. I don't want to mess up the engine. I'm looking for the basics that won't require me to change the cams. I'm interested in installing headers, an air intake, and exhaust but I'm not sure the engine can handle any of those mods. |

Air intake is a waste of money unless you do it right and do a TRUE cold air intake, and even then gains will be negligible on a lower power car. Header and exhaust won't hurt the car, if anything you help it by removing restrictions in the exhaust stream. Again, don't expect huge gains given the type of engine it is. Other thing you could do it shave the head to raise compression. Outside of that you have cams, forced induction, or swapping engines.

Listen to the podcasts too - the earlier ones go through a lot of this stuff. Basically, nothing cheap and bolt-on will give you any worthwhile gains on a 5S IMHO. Any increased with pod filters / exhaust etc. on a stock 5S is just going to make you FEEL faster. Spend money on some good maintenance and just let it run as well as it possibly could from the factory. -------------------- SOLD :( 1997 ST204 Celica ZR -----> See it here on 6GC! 2013 October Celica of the Month XD Now: '00 NB8B Mazda MX5 -----> See it here in off topic! |

eBay header will not increase power. Removing the cat will not increase power and just makes the car sound raspy as ****. Intake won't increase power enough to feel.
Cams will increase power, SAFC will increase power. Proper, Japanese extractor header will help increase power. eBay ones are too short/tubes are too large off the head to do anything but make noise and slightly improve top end. -------------------- 1994 Toyota Celica GT-S 5S-FE 190k Miles. our engines are not made like the honda engines, in which any bolt ons will give you gains. any bolt on to the 5sfe will give you near to almost no gain, very minimal unless you do some serious spending.
air intake, exhaust, or chips, dont waste money if you think youll get 30Hp, If that were the case, our cars would be popular with the tuning crowd, but they are not. expect maybe 2 - 5 hp. You have to pay to play. Swap is the way to go, or extensive engine mods, with aftermarket ecu. -------------------- Learned a lot in 10 years... I don't feel no power gain but awesome look and sound. Lol. -------------------- |

Best bang for your buck would be to spray nitrous. Good gain and cheaper than swapping engines. Make sure to spend money on a bottle warmer and all the parts needed. Run it right and it shouldnt give you any problems.
Im not talking about installing a nos button. Tap the system into your tps and have a window switch for safety. Any other kinds of mods that arent turbo or sc... Wouldnt make much gains as the others have said |
