Ok, I will be doing a 3sgte swap on my Celica this year. I have a 1994 ST AT200. The car will be getting a gt4 front end, 3sgte engine, and AWD conversion. Which is why I am here. I wanted to know what it takes to swap the rear end to make my car all wheel drive. I have searched and searched and only came across bits and pieces of information. Can anyone help?

I told myself I was going to do the AWD swap, but let's face it. I won't have the money for 5 years and in 5 years I can just import a GT4..

Honestly, to do the conversion doesn't cost a whole lot of money.
The materials cost is less than $75 to make the brackets and all. It just requires a welder or access to a welder (easily rentable for under $200) and enough welding experience to make safe and solid welds. Malek's swap used DOM Tubing which requires a bender making it more difficult than using box tube which you would just cut. Thank you for the assistance. My mechanic/friend is helping me with everything so he has all the accessible tools to make this happen. I know it's not a direct swap but my reason for going this route is to utilize the power the way it should be. If I can utilize a CA spec 3sgte, with the E154, and the correct rear end I feel I will be able to put more to the wheels and won't have to worry about wheel hop. I just want to make this car as enjoyable as possible without cutting corners.

you will NEVER get a 3S-GTE in a 6th gen to pass smog or BAR. it didnt come in a 6th gen in the states and All-Trac engines are older than the car so it is not legal.

you will NEVER get a 3S-GTE in a 6th gen to pass smog or BAR. it didnt come in a 6th gen in the states and All-Trac engines are older than the car so it is not legal. Can't he use a 94 or 95 mr2 turbo cal 3sgte? I thought that would be legal. Even if not strictly legal it would likely go thru the average smog inspection just fine. They'll see it's a Celica, they'll see it's a turbo charged engine, they'll see that that year Celica never came with a turbo charged engine and FAIL.

But it has to be a 94 or 95 USDM MR2. its just like putting a 97 2JZ-GTE in a 94 SC300. the engine is newer than the car that its going into. -------------------- 2001 Celica GT-S Turbo

Ah got it. How would they tell what year the MR2 engine is from though?

mr2 turbo came in 94-95 but good luck finding one! very extremely limited number were imported.

Ah got it. How would they tell what year the MR2 engine is from though? thats the trick. just like how im using a 3MZ engine with a 1MZ ECU. as long as the inspector doesnt see the 3MZ stamp on the block, Ill just tell them its a 1MZ. If the USDM did get 94/95 MR2's then all you should be good to go. just tell the BAR that its from a 95 MR2. year and VIN is not stored in the ECU so the inspector will have no idea -------------------- 2001 Celica GT-S Turbo

They dont check the serial number on the engine?

California spec mr2 3sgte engine would work here in California I also know of people who have used jam 3sgte motors and drilled them for the egr so they would pass the visual. Basically retrofitting the jdm engines with the usdm goodies to pass all the inspections here.

they dont check serial numbers. in fact there are no visible serial or lot numbers on the block. only a VIN plate. And if you buy a new shortblock from toyota, there is no VIN plate on it, so you could just say you went that route.

So it should be CARB and smog legal if I use a California spec 3sgte or install EGR on a JDM 3sgte?? There is a place in Chico that does the EGR installation on JDM 3sgte's. |
