My brother is looking at buying an 03 Celia GTS that's been sitting at a dealer for 2 and a half months. I went with him to check it out and it looks great, has a clean car fax, and only has 80k miles. It drove real nice in the city and highway. When he came back from the test drive with the sales guy we looked at the engine bay and just for the heck of it i pulled the oil cap off and noticed a little white sludge. I pulled the dip stick and the oil looked perfect.

The sales guy said it happens when cars sit for a while and it's just moisture but it will clear up after it's been driven more.

I know this is crazy but i tasted the sludge and it was bitter, not sweet.

Thoughts?

That's normal. Moisture builds up in the cap being that it's the highest and coolest spot. If the car isn't driven enough, for long enough distance, it will do that.

Yup. Its normal. Some cars have it regardless even when the car is driven. If the dipstick was clean, I wouldn't worry at all. You can also check the coolant level and smell it to determine bad head gasket in the future.

and it should be bitter, if it was sweet then coolant got in there.

if its a 03 then look to see if it has DBW or a throttle cable, that was the changeover year. also look for air injection. its an emissions system added in 03
