Does anyone happen to have a photo laying around that clearly shows a properly installed 6GC inner oil seal for a front wheel bearing before the steering knuckle assembly (FRONT AXLE HUB ASSEMBLY) is mounted back onto the vehicle? I understand the outer seal is supposed to be flush.
And, does anyone know if the proper installation of a new front wheel bearing requires packing the space between the actual bearing and the oil seals with wheel bearing grease? |

I've stumbled upon a website that happens to have a procedure for replacing the front wheel bearing that has more detail than my BGB. I think it is sufficient for me to understand how to install the inside oil seal. The included diagram (almost the same as in the BGB) makes it clear that the snap ring goes in before the inner oil seal.
I never could find a photo that shows the oil seal installed when image searching with Google. I find that surprising. Being that the photo of the "inside side of the steering knuckle that shows an installed inside oil seal" is MIA, when I get the non-reusable parts I didn't already have from Toyota next Wednesday (snap ring and dust deflector) and press in the next bearing and oil seals, I will take that photo and post it here for all the world to see. Also, for those of you who like to know such things, when I damaged the oil seals, I noticed that there was a springy thingy that was suddenly sitting on the bearing surface. That strange looking spring was knocked loose from the oil seal, and didn't come from the bearing. I've learned that its name is 'garter spring.' Its function is to keep pressure on the inner rubber lip of the seal so it stays in contact with the shaft or spindle as it is rotating. So, it acts something like a woman's garter that goes around her thigh and holds up her stockings. Here is the website page that includes a slightly more detailed front wheel bearing replacement procedure: https://worldtracker.org/media/library/Car%...ion%20front.pdf I haven't yet figured out what the top level of that website (World Tracker) is supposed to be doing. Perhaps someone here already knows? It seems to have all kinds of information that might be generally useful. Finally, I still would like to know if I should pack wheel bearing grease inside the spaces left between the bearing and oil seals after installing the seals, so if you happen to know, please add a comment. |
