So the 5SFE in my 94 has unfortunately died and I'm possibly looking at replacing it with a 5S out of a 96 Camry. The only issue I have with that is the 96+ are OBDII instead of the OBDI in my Celi.

How hard is it to swap the engine and everything over?

The '96 still uses a distributor ignition, so you can make it work with your OBD-I harness and ECU.

There might be some sensors and emissions stuff that won't be used.

strip the long block down and use your manifolds and sensors. the camry has balance shaft on the crankshaft so i dont think the oil pans are the same.

look for a celica engine and it will be plug and play

The problem is that finding a Celica or Celica engine here is next to impossible and I'd like to make sure it's running before buying it so buying from out of town is pretty much out of the question. The Camry is the only thing that I would be able to find locally and even those aren't too common to find either. There's a 94 Camry for sale for $900 that I might take a look at now.

So any of the Camry engines will have the balancing shaft and it will have to be deleted?

I don't think it HAS to be deleted but it's like 20lbs of extra rotating mass to spin up and down.

Alright sounds good. Do you have any input on the OBDII/OBDI swap? Just trying to get as much info as I can so I can get this done quickly.

Like Smaay said, swap the everything but the block. Head may be ok to use from the Camry, but you need your everything else.

I swapped the motor and Trans out of my first celica after it was totaled ( a 97gt) into a 95gt.
Honestly I found it to be more of a pain to trace the wire for the obd out of the 97 than it was to swap the motor
I didn't notice very many if any differences. Although I have to admit I wasn't looking for them either. I had all the parts I needed less than 10 feet away from me though. All in all it took me about 24 hrs to completely swap both motors the computers and get the odb2 working correctly . Every time I get the emissions done the guys always ask me what I did to make the car run so clean, I smile and pull up torque while watchingtthem scratch their heads.

Good info! One more question: since most Camrys I'll find are gonna be auto, what needs to be done to swap the 5S to my manual Celi?

Your build thread I posted a lot of the differences between the engines and years. As far as going auto to manual you'll have to use your flywheel and clutch along with installing a pilot bearing. Depending on the age of your clutch you might just want to go ahead and buy the Exedy kit. The one advantage is you'll be able to place both engines side by side and mix and match until you have what it practically another Celica engine.

The clutch was just replaced in the fall when my old one went on me. There's now a 94 Camry that just got posted up today with 133k kms that I would love to snatch up. I'm just not sure if it has the 5S or the 1MZ. That thing is still a baby!

If the price is right go for it. If anything I'd be half tempted at that point to use the Camry for a daily and do a BEAMS or 1MZ swap with the Celica. Then the Celica can be your Spring/Summer and part of Fall fun toy and relegate the Camry to Winter use.

They're selling the car for pretty cheap so I'm sure the rest of the car is scrap and probably would need a lot of work to be safetied.

Damnit Box. This thing is so minty. I was almost hoping it would be absolutely rusted to hell and I could just swap over the engine but I can't bring myself to do that now tongue.gif
