Hello fellow Celica owners!

The name is Chris and its nice to meet all of you!

Ok so first I guess the backstory:

My brother bought this Celica from a buy-here lot in Kentucky and used it as a drive car for work, I assume it was in limp mode from the point of purchase. From that point he put maybe 5k miles on it, slapped a guardrail AND put it under the trailer of Semi. I got the car for driving him back and forth to his worksite while he was unable to do so legally.

So now onto the Weirdness and Questions:

When I got the Celica it had CEL/MIL with code 12 (RPM Sensor), I changed out the Dizzy and the CEL was gone, not much else seemed to change. Still misfiring slightly at low rpm and idle (1.2k and under) [sometimes after a long long drive, say 400ish miles, the car will idle down so far it has died 1 time, no spitting or sputtering, just low idle w/ misfire and then die]

It is leaking oil from the valve-cover gasket (already got a new one just waiting for good weather to put it on) but (forgive the noob question) would that also cause there to be some oil in the area under the rubber boot shield (sorry don't know the proper name for the square impression the valve cover that the square rubber boot lid sits just in)

[Picture of oil in boot impression and on line above the oil fill cap]

[Picture all four cylinders boot impression]

[Picture of third plug bore] (all bores look just like this one give or take]

----

I read in a few Celica threads that the engine being out of time can cause oil in the plug bores and can cause the spark plugs to foul out quickly, I also know from common knowledge that an engine being out of time can also cause hard-start and misfiring. (Which I have a sinister feeling my car is in LIMP and Misfiring because it is out of time. The car at this moment has 257k on it and the last marked Timing Belt service was 101k in '06)

So I guess I would just like some thoughts on what I have said above, maybe I have missed something or am not thinking about something simple, but now for part 2!

Firstly let me say, my clutch engages very nice. I don't feel any slipping on take-off or on decel. But say for instance I'm moving down a city street at 30, well you would only keep light throttle to cruise at 30. If I keep light throttle the car I don't wanna say 'JERK' maybe lunges back and forth. BUT ONLY when putting on light throttle or letting off light throttle. For instance; if you gun it as the clutch engages you won't feel it, even if you just begin accelerating normally as the clutch engages you won't feel it. But let off the throttle after very short acceleration after the clutch engages and the car will exhibit the lunge. Also if you are going say 30 and just let off the gas and then get back on it you will feel it lunge.

However during these 'lunges' the rpm/sound/feel of the motor never changes, which leads me to think it is drive-train related, but I could use some advice and good places to start in relation to this!

So...in short, hope I have been concise. Nice to be a yota owner and I hope for some solid discussion and suggestions!

Chris

If the timing hasn't been done in 150K miles it's very likely the belt is stretched out and has let things get out of time. I'd get a timing kit and do that and make sure the cams are in time with the crank. After that I'd grab a timing light and make sure that's all kosher, as on the OBDI cars you can adjust the timing somewhat with the car in diagnosis mode and turning the distributor. Other things to look into if you have sporadic idle would be the idle air control valve. As far as oil in the plug tubes just need a a valve cover and plug tube seal set. I'd look around RockAuto, eBay, and Amazon for the best prices on everything as 99% of the time you will at those three places.

As far as the lurching that's normal when you lug an engine down, as sick as it sounds like your motor is running that's probably the issue.

I would check your engine mounts, that bump or lunge you are describing could be from worn engine mounts. Change the timing belt for sure and get a tune-up new: (spark plugs, plug wires, distributor cap, rotor, air filter, fuel filter). I would also get the oil leaks fixed ASAP.

Yeah, if the leaks are bad enough they'll get to the mounts and destroy them. I'd do the timing/tune up and tackle the oil leaks and then take it from there.

I had a bad valve cover oil leak like that. It got oil into the distributor and killed it. I would check your ignition components once your oil leak is fixed. distributor cap, plugs, wires , etc.. and check the ignition timing with a timing light. follow the instructions in a repair manual jumping the correct terminals in the diagnostic port to stop the advance then using the light and putting a white mark on the notch in the main pulley so it's easy to see, etc.. Valve timing could be an issue. you can visually inspect the timing belt to make sure everything is still lined up at TDC (top dead center for #1 cylinder, 0 degrees on the pulley)

My gfs carmy had similar issue same engine 5sfe... First I changed vavle cover and spark plugs. What I did was take out one spark plug at a time crank over the engine to get all the oil out and do it again for all 4 cylinders.. Problem seemed fixed for ohhh 5 miles. So I decided to change the spark plug wires. Buy them online.. Autozone/advanced wants 40$+ online its 25. After changing the wires its good as new the rpms done die down and no longer stalls. Car has 240k miles and its just never been taken care of. It's a 1000$ winter car so who cares lol.

Should have been more clear about the lurching, it's every gear. If I take off and just roll it instead of accelerating for 2nd, say I hold five mile an hour with light throttle the car will lurch around a bit. If I go up to 10mph and shift out to 2nd and get on it sloppily without being mindful of clutch vs. throttle it will lurch about. If I'm decelerating slowly with light throttle applied saying like going from 45 to 42-41 it will lurch back and forth and like bob your head. If you're driving along at a constant 30mph and let of the gas and get back in it (not hard but playful) it will lurch a bit. The sound of the motor doesn't change, no clangs, no sputtering, no change in vibration...just the weird lurch.

As for the timing, yeah I forgot to mention I've got valve tapping around 2300-2700 and I had already pretty much accepted this car needs to be timed and also it needed a valve cover gasket and tube seal kit. I'm thinking of throwing in a new oil pump for good measure, just wanted to get all my ducks in a row before I really get under the bonnet.

Thanks for all the answers!
