 helloI went to see a Toyota Celica GT coupe yesterday and very much going to get it on Saturday, the only thing is they said to check the insurance. I'm 21, etc etc, and the cars an import (i live in UK) the car is a N96 reg when I ask my insurance (Norwich Union) they said the only one that comes up is 98 SS, when you type the reg in, but I know if you dont type the plate/reg in you can get GT which is the one I want, SO if the car is manufactared in 96 and its imported in 98 surely your ment to say 96 for manufacturing?? WHat does SS mean?? how is it different to GT?? Any one any good insurance in UK?? What should I look for or at before buying? thanks hope you can help! -------------------- |

The SS has a better engine, and has side skirts and SS is super strut or sport suspension? Im not sure so someone can correct me.

hmm of all the JDM cars I've seen, the SS1 and SS2 didn't have Superstrut suspension... Nigel, TBH insurance on an import is only slightly more expensive.. ideally go for the ss2.. I think it states the model on the chassis tag.. SS1 was the entry- level model. |

SS does not stand for super strut
 i drive a SSII and it does not come with super strut suspension  super strut was optional on some SSII and as ben said SSIII have all got super struts, SSI equates to the Uks 1.8 ST and the SSII equates to the UK GT 3sge engine  i believe that the SSII is more powerful than the uk GT insurance wise im with Tesco at the mo and they have quoted me ok with me being 21 and with 3 pts

So this begs the question, what exactly does SS stand for?
We've decided it isn't Super Strut, and I've googled Special Stage, Sports Special, Special Sports, Sports Stage - but no definate answers so far, perhaps it's simply a model code. And to the original poster - I'd say either the SSII or the GT with 3SGE is a fine choice and if a car is manufactured in 96 and imported in 98 then yes, it should be called a 96

Sorry but the info posted are wrong in some degree. Super strut is very usual on import Celis, but even if the car does not have it, you are better off. Reason: Bushings of Super Strut are very sensitive and cost a lot more to replace, but super strut does not really makes that much difference. TTE replaced this system on the race celis because of this. I am of the opinion that the bhp on the SS II is more like 173 and not 177. Furthermore, the SS III info are all wrong as the SS III with the BEAMS VVTi (red)engine has much more power at aroung 200 BHP and much more torque. The SSIII was produced from 1998 onwards. |

Oi ! get back in yer box.. That info is quoted direct from the JDM brochures matey.. if you read what i posted correctly I made no mention of the BEAMS engine SS3 which does push a lot more power. You are correct in that respect. Remeber JDM cars are tuned higher and run on much better fuel. hence a GT4 in Japan is 250ish bhp, and stock european is lower.. if you care to check the sticky thread on the Gen 6 section of www.celica-club.co.uk there is a lot more information collated by 'Uncle Bob' who is a tyota history buff - and an expert on all the celica models - he's owned pretty one of the gen 1-6 models ! As regards to superstrut suspension.. you are having a laugh - it makes a hell of a difference.. !! It is more complex but all the WRC celica's have it.. it's an option on the ss3 only, and on soem of the gen7's that are imported - believe me having bin out in one - i'd jump at it - it really sticks to the road. the BEAMS ss3 was a very limited run and are as rare as hen's teeth.. the stock ss3 was a 3SGE engine. |

If only the SS3 has Super strut then how come my 1995 import ST206 Curren (With SSII engine) has it?

you have a curren.. we're talking about 'proper' celica's.. it was an option.. the original purchaser of your car in Japan wanted it so asked for it.. enough said. not all SS2 will have it - there's a few members in the UK club who have import SS2's and don't have superstrut.. |

This was a hit below the belt my friend. I am not sure if the guys in the US with the liftbacks would agree withyou that the Curren/ Celica Liftback is not a proper Celica. And for the few that dont know what a Curren is: The Curren is basically the JDM version of the Liftback Celica with only one difference; the headlights are different. Go to my profile for picture. Anyway, I also have a GT4, so I guess this makes up the fact that i do not have a 'proper Celica'. |
