hey just bought my first celica and am looking for some help to get it running how i would like. the front cv joint clicks while turning so i have got myself a replacement drive shaft and am going to change it out over the weekend. the only issue is that its passenger side and all the how2s i can find seem to deal with drivers side onle. its a 1997 2.0 gt uk model with abs. any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

im guessing that means there is a difference in how they come out of the transmission, depending on what side of the car its on? Yessir. The short shaft has a c-clip on the end, and requires prying out, or using a slide hammer with a fork on it. The longer shaft is simply held in place with a bracket in the middle, and just slides in and out the trannie without a clip. Either way, both sides you are going to disconnect them from the wheel assembly via the axle nut. I remove the strut bolts so I have more room to move the hub around. Once you remove the bottom end from the wheel assemblies you just go at depending on which you are working on. The one with the clip can occasionally be a pain, if it takes you more then 30 minutes prying to get it out, I would go find a slide hammer. [size="4"][/size] Don't even waste your time trying to pry it out! If you can go rent a slide hammer (maybe not in the UK..?) then do that and take 5 seconds to pull the axle out! I wasted idk how much time fking with it until I drove myself to Advanced Auto and rented a slide hammer with a hook attachment. First slide of the hammer and it popped out. I was a little upset at myself for wasting so much time.. -------------------- |

I was a little upset at myself for wasting so much time.. Feel ya. I've pulled that axle 5 times now, the first 2 times easy...next 3. I was screaming so loud the area thought I was crazy. Rent the slide hammer, 15 seconds its out. Truly though, I've noticed if the axle doesn't have any play when into the trannie, it comes out easy with a few taps and a pry bar. Possibly a bearing going bad, or just old age..no idea, but it appears on the abused transmission it takes alot of work to get that beast out. |
