You're right....and wrong. There are businesses that do it, but generally they specialize in certain specific cars. For example Ameritech with the McLaren F1, GT Motorcars and MotoRex woth the Skyline GT-R. If you ever price a car with these guys you'll see that its quite expensive. Its a lot more than the sticker price of the car and shipping it over here. The cars these places bring in are squeaky clean. There is absolutely nothing about them that is not 100% legal. They may go in some roundabout ways to do it, but they're totally legal and could never be challenged or reversed. This is what the people with money and the desire do. If they have these two things, they're not going to screw around. They're going to get the baddest car you can get, which is generally the skyline. I bet you'd be surprised how many are in the us. I've seen 2 with my own eyes, and I don't exactly go looking for them. The GT4 sadly just isn't in quite the same league as the skyline. Anything much past that in price (except things like the mclaren) and you might as well get a porsche turbo or something similar. You get all the performance and looks of the hard to import cars, and its a lot less hassle. This page gives you an idea what it takes to do it yourself (legally): Some information on importing cars (not really GT-R specific) I've talked to people that have done this, not so legally, and they say that as long as you get get the car past the port thats 99% of the battle. Its very very possible (not quite easy, but close) to register it once that is done. I really think this GT4 is already home free if somebody will just cough up the dough and put some time and research into it. You'll likely have to buy a beater 6th gen, steal all its vin plates, and crush it (or turn it into a race car, we have several with no vins). Every single car you mentioned in your post has been imported into the US and is driving around right now. There may not be a lot of them, they may not be totally legal, but they're here. |
