it may depend on just how high quality the oil you buy is.
but, what I've learned the hard way from other cars I've had is you should change it often and not wait until it really needs it.
over time gunk will build up and may cause problems like blocking up the sump and just making the motor dirty.

A lot of people like to run expensive synthetic and it goes for 7k miles.
If you're like me and have an old dirty motor that's been abused and has 150k+ miles on it I would buy good quality oil(but I don't run synthetic), with an expensive filter like a Mobile 1 or Bosh,
and then I change it every 3k miles (or less).

the real test is to check your dipstick at least once a week, and change it as soon as the oil looks dark or burnt even if it only has 2k miles on it.
if you keep doing this you'll clean up that old motor.
I also advise against using things like Seafoam IN the crankcase. just because it does a REALY good job of knocking loose all the old crud that's in the corners of the motor and that may cause you
even more problems if you have an old neglected motor.
