I have been pricing transmissions and transmission rebuild kit and im not entirely sure which kit to buy. I cant find a transmission locally with low mileage or within my budget. Does anyone know where i can buy a rebuild kit?

If you're just needing bearings here're a few places:
http://www.transmissionpartsus.com/product/BK419.html https://cobratransmission.com/s53-bearing-g...f48e2487b2a5e1e http://www.manualtransmissionpart.com/BK419.html http://www.makcotransmissionparts.com/BK419.html If you need the synchros then you're shy of $700 anywhere you get it. Everywhere shows the kit is for a '94-99 Celica but i would contact and confirm first just to cover your ass if for some reason it's not right, even though the S53 was used in the '90-93 Celica GT behind a 5S-FE with the only differences I can find find is the second gear and final gear ratios. -------------------- 2001 Miata LS 5-speed

Im pretty new to the car world still. I know a little more than the basics but not much. do you think a transmission for $250 with 100k on it is worth it? My trannt is stuck in third but the shifter moves by hand. any suggestions? |

My trannt is stuck in third but the shifter moves by hand. any suggestions? Sounds like your 3/4 shift fork may have broken. If - with engine OFF, or course, or you'll grenade the box completely - you can shift into 1/2 and 5, but 3/4 feels funny, that's more evidence to broken fork. Of course, you'll never know for sure until you take it all apart. $250 seems like ok-ish price for 100k box. Not great, but not terrible either. If your old box was in good shape otherwise, and you have a neighbor that's willing to help you with a rebuild, might be worth a try to repair it. If it had other issues and a million miles, forget it and get another box, cause a full rebuild is more money than it's worth. This post has been edited by slavie: Dec 22, 2016 - 12:43 AM |
