Hello out there in ancient Toyota-land,

So, I've spent 6 months or so chasing an idling / stalling problem with my 1995 Celica GT, US domestic market 2.2 liter 5S-FE

The symptoms were the car would stall when warmed up and then would not restart until after it had cooled off. I checked it and it had absolutely no spark at all. Following the diagnosis procedure in the factory maintenance manual led to either "bad wiring harness" or "Bad ECU". In addition a repair shop and even the dealer took a crack at it and the only error the dealer could come up with was "faulty signal from distributor" or something like that. The ECU was showing no codes and no check engine light.

The Internet of things says this hot stalling on a 2.2 is primarily caused by:
- Bad ignitor
- Cracked coil in the distributor
- Bad ECT Engine Coolant Temp Sensor

Chasing this problem and others, I had replaced all of those, and in addition
- Plugs
- Wires
- EGR valve
- EGR proportioning valve

What I found is my rough / low idle was caused by a dirty Idle Air Valve. I took this off and cleaned it with throttle body cleaner like is posted everywhere on the Internet.

After I took the ECU apart I found a blow 147pf capacitor, it had **** the bed. So using a capacitor replacement kit from Ebay "1990-2002 Toyota / Lexus ECU/ECM/Computer Capacitor Kit (MR2, Camry, LS400, etc)
Listed for charity.1990-2002 Toyota / Lexus ECU/ECM/Computer Capacitor Kit (MR2, Camry, LS400, etc)" from the seller "blenddoor" (no affiliation).

I replaced all of the capacitors in the ECU and that fixed it!! No more hot stall, car starts and idles like new, can restart when hot over and over with no issues.

Heres the ECU

And here's a shot of the capacitor that **** the bed. The top didn't bulge, instead it leaked out the bottom. The leakage is the brown pile underneath it.

Hope that helps somebody, it was a long journey for myself and even the dealer.

good to hear!
for future refrence there is a company called relentless motorsports out of TX that can complete this service for people that dont feel comfortable replacing the caps themselves.

If they don’t, Drift Motion in St. Louis will do the 1JZ ECU for sure.
