What should I do and look for when inspecting the master and slave cylinders?

Have someone get in the car, and depress the clutch fully. Look at the slave cylinder's piston as it moves the cluth fork and reaches maximum extension. As long as the "driver" keeps their foot down, the piston should not retract. To get a little better idea, I held a ruler up to the clutch fork, and used the marks as a quick indicator of any retraction. When my master cylinder was bad, I had at least half an inch of movement in the piston within a few seconds.
I also used this method when I was bleeding the clutch hydraulics, I kept testing until I had no appreciable movement, then called it quits. No problems yet, and it's been a few months now.
Unfortunately, this won't isolate the cause of your problem (if you have one) any further than the hydraulic system. You could have a bad slave cyl, master, or both. I ended up replacing both because my master cylinder was at fault, and I had already changed my slave cyl.
