Personally, I'm not convinced by the announcement. I don't see Toyota choosing to simultaneously kill off the Celica and MR2/S. That's a big risk for them to take. Killing off one series and finding out down the line you were wrong would be costly, never mind two. And there's the possibility of the Supra being left in limbo since nothing I've heard about a new one has struck me as being 100% concrete, though I'm certainly hopeful.
The Celica hasn't been the biggest seller the world has ever seen. It's always been seen as the "individual's choice" and not necessarily the choice of the masses. That said, it's always been very popular with the people who do "get it" and got good reviews. More importantly, the Celica has often been the testing ground for Toyota's latest bit of technology (the most obvious of course being VVTi/VVTLi since they're the most recent). And since it's been around so long you know it's got to have paid its dues with Toyota otherwise it wouldn't have made it to 7 generations. SO DON'T KILL IT OFF! As for the MR2...Toyota, that sold like hot-cakes that have been recently marked down to half-price, ever since its arrival in the mid-80s. Toyota put exhaustive effort into perfecting the car, the result of which is the MR2 series being viewed as one of their finest technical achievements. Take the SW20. The only reason it stopped selling in the US when it did is because someone decided to discontinue it there. It would've carried on stomping away in the sales figures for ages if it had just been left alone, like it did in other territories. So suddenly terminating the series sounds bizarre. They might get rid of them, and they might mean forever...right now at least...I've seen statements like that made before in the car industry and the "dead" model often makes a comeback X years later. They might only get rid of them in certain territories, or it might not happen at all. Either way if they do do it, for any period of time, it will certainly be a shame. The 6GC (particularly the ST205) has been my fave car since the generation launched. Well, that's my 2 cents for what it's worth. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to fill Toyota's Inbox with all the E-mail my fingers can muster, just in case... |
