i've seen some discussions about a Supercharged 5SFE thought i should share my opinions.....
Ripp Mods Supercharger (around $3400) you can be pushing "reliable" 227.3 horsepower at 9psi, you'll also need a "boost cooler" to run over 8psi. Now to the rambling... Most people have a 2nd generation 3SGTE just because there easier to find then the 3rd, and are more advanced than the 1st generation 3SGTE's. The JDM 2nd Generation 3SGTE pushes out 225hp and similar torque numbers (USD is 200hp). Lets say with the 3sgte your going to buy a complete front clip, well $3,500 sounds like a good price, well add another $1500 for labor (for celica owners who aren't good when it comes to mechanic's, or dont have a place to perform there swap, or don't have the time to do it), and another $750-1000 for custom exhaust, clutch, an intake, etc... that comes out to around $5785 oh yea plus the $100 your going to have to slip the guy at the emissions shop, and countless small piece's you'll have to replace, you will be just around $6000 with a Turbocharged 2.0L 3SGTE with around 50,000 miles...... Now for the Supercharger, its cost $3400, and you'll need a boost cooler if you want to go over 8psi (and you know you will!) so put down another $500, plus around $400 for labor (for the mechanically inclined), and $700 for a custom cat-back, intake, maybe some new sparkplugs, oh lets throw in some new wiring for looks, well your right at $5000, sounds good, now you have your 5SFZE with quite a few miles on it, pushing around 240hp at the crank. now about those miles you have on your engine, before you put that nice supercharger, why not shop around alittle, many people on this site, and on ebay, and countless other sites are selling low mileage 5sfe's, and you can get a basic rebuilt for around $750, now your at the $5750 mark... Now right now both engines should be pushing the 240hp mark if not over it, both are nearly the same price, now which ones for you? Lets see here we'll start with the 3SGTE its a factory engine, so reliablity isn't really an issue, then again it can if your mechanic is mentally challanged like coomers (4age swap), but you should be set for reliablity, now to practical, is it? well yes, alittle turbo lag but nothing thats going to make it terrible for everyday driving, sure the engine is used, but it is at its factory settings (if you haven't started modding it yet), so you should be set. SLOWCELICA94 stated that one has forged internals, and that made me think about, later if you want to upgrade your engine to put out even more, than you can do much more with the 5SFZE unless you want to replace all the internals, and such, and the 3SGTE will be good for another 80-100hp before you have to get inside and start changing internals. now for the 5SFZE This is not a factory supercharged engine, who knows if toyota ever had this come into their heads, but rippmods has a 1 year warrenty, and you have a freshly rebuilt engine, so you should be good right? yes you should at first, but after a year or two, your internals will be wearing badly, the 5S block wasn't made for forced induction, so after that warrenty is up you could start having some problems, oh and for practibility i'd think this would win for the everyday driver, just because the supercharger provides boost at such low rpms, you'll get loads of low end torque. anyways, in the long run, i'd say you guys should stick with the 3SGTE swaps... lol, im bored, and i've been comparing the two engines in my head for a few days, thought i should share... i'm personally starting to have more faith in the 5SFE as a engine worthy of tuning. I searched for "5SFTE" on yahoo last night and got tons of MR2 owners and Celica owners with turbos, some with over 10 psi on stock internals with excellent reliability.
One former N/A MR2 ran a 10.9(!?!) with a highly-tuned turbo setup complemented by forged pistons, shot-peened rods, and Webcams camshaft regrinds...good for a dyno proven 515hp/355tq...so the 5SFE can definately use boost and use it well if done right. ![]() Link- Video of Boosted 5SFE MR2- 10.9 second pass Enjoy.
