When you begin to see the light, you have approximately 2 gallons left.. It may turn on and off, becuase of the inclines and declines of the fuel levels while traveling on the roads or off roads.. But depends on your MPG, you may be able to travel about 40-80 miles..

From my experience, thats only somewhat true. The celica and most toyota's I've driven always starts out with the light coming on and off. That tells me I only have 3 gallons left. When the light stays on, that tells me I have 2 gallons left. From my experience this is what I've found to be true. Cause even when the car is just sitting around it comes on and off. I've only noticed that in the toyota's though. My nissan never did that and my brother's honda doesn't do that either.
