improve stock intake, or am i stupid Options

i hear that the weak point in the stock intake is the tubing going down into the drivers side fender. they say that its too restrictive. what if i took that tubing out and just drilled 1" holes all around it? it would be less restrictive and still be getting colder air. the holes would be before the filter (obviously), so it sounds like it would work. what do you guys think?

For mine, I just took the whole thing out in the fender. But then I went to CAI soon after. The only way you'll know if this really works is to look at it. If there's no openings, or they're all really small, then it'll help. I think some years are different, because people were arguing with me on the effectiveness of this.
