i recieved two jl audio 12w3 woofers....one of them sounds amazing...outstanding...on the other hand, the other sub's dust cap (the very center peice of the sub that bubbles out with the JL logo on it) had come off in the mail and the sub sounds very buzzy and doesnt carry any tone...will gluing the cap back on solve this issue? should the sub sound the same with the cap off as it should on?

glueing the dustcap back on will not do anything... the dustcap is just there to cover up the voice coil... as long as the voice coil-surround-cone is intact the sub is fine... its probably the subwoofer itself, or it is wired wrong... again, the sub without a dustcap is fine, but it is in danger of being "hurt" more than the other sub since its gone and the voice coil is shown to all elements...
EDIT: you said you hear a scraping noise when you push the sub down? that means the voice coils have came out of allignment, and this usually happens when being pushed to its extremes for a long period of time or being clipped very badly.... that sub is more than likely blown.. the next stage would be for it to seize up completely...
