i was wondering what rpms you guys shift at, and what rpms you cruise at to get the best mpg and what mpg do you get. i get from 19-21 average, i dont always drive like a grandma though.

i dont get why you guys get so good gas mileage. is keeping the rpms as low as possible not the best way, ie 35mph in 5th at like 2300rpm?

IF you are going at a constant speed (no accelerating, no hills) then YES, it is good to be in a gear like 4th or 5th. But if you are accelerating and you shift at that low of an rpm, your engine will bog down and that uses more gas then someone accelerating and shifting around 3k-4k. Just like riding a bicycle, if you are going about 5mph and then try to accelerate in a gear like 4th or 5th, it's gonna be a lot more stressful on you then if you went through gears normally. Just about the same concept. Celica's are pretty good stable about gas mileage, I seem to get pretty much the same mpg when I beat on it, as when I baby it. -Josh |
