I have been working at this plastics manufacturing warehouse since September. I have been working swing shift (3-11pm) and it fit nicely into my school schedule. At first they would make us work maybe one Saturday a month, then every other week, and now it has come to 3 times a month. I only get 5 days off in a month.
Now, there has always been pressure that they might put my dept. back on 12 hour shifts, but the plant manager told me and my father (who also works in the same plant, different deptartment, and also Shop Steward) that they will not be going to 12hr shifts in my dept. and that I was safe from that. If they did go back I would have to quit and find another job, hopefully that pays equal or more, which is hard to find. Where else is an 18 year old going to find a place to pay them 12.19 an hour? Well, I pulled into the parking lot on like.. Wednesday I think and my dad was walking down into the parking lot. So I pull up next to him and he hands me a "Vacation Sell-back" sheet and says "Your department is going to 12hr shifts, you had to put in a mandatory 2 weeks notice today." I feel relieved in a sence, because now I might be able to find a REAL M-F job, not a M-S one, however I am terrified of change. The Plant manager won't talk to me now, and my dad wasn't suposed to tell me that the plant manager turned in my 2 weeks notice for me, so I am waiting to see how long he goes w/o telling me. THEN after all of that, the plant manager told my dad that he wants me to stay for an additional 2 weeks to train the new employees. I said F*ck no, let them screw everything up. Has anything like this happened to anyone else? Dont worry about it. I have to agree with the statement dont burn down any bridges for a couple of reasons.
1. Your dad works there and you do not want to create any problems there. 2. You never know when you will need job references in the future from previous employers. 3. You may return at this place in the future, or you may want to be able to return. I do not think it costs you much to keep the above choices open to you. When i left my previous job i had a small argument with my manager and last week when i went for a job interview (a job with twice the salary i am getting now) they asked for references from previous employers and I was terrified that I would have to go to that SOB and lick his balls to get the references required. They got someone else with more experience. If i would loose such a job for bull**** like that (not getting references from previous employers) i would kick my self. |
