an egr is exactly what natalie described it to be. It is an emisions lowering device. For everyone with a 5s-fe open your hood and look above the air intake thingy (forgot what its called, the thing with the toyota name and stuff where the black airbox airway comes to the metal piece... yeh..) there will be a little circle thing and it should say egr valve, thats your egr. These are not included in japenese engines because well its not the law! So that is the emisions problem with the 3s-gte... The egr is required emisions equipment for any car basically above year like '74 or somethin like that. An egr cannot be added (well minus the money can get you anything phrase) because the engine basically needs to be built for it because the head needs to be molded to be fitted for an egr. The 3sgte has a mounted area for an egr but the head was not made to fit it in (this is probably because they were not totaly sure if they were gona release in the u.s. or not) so an egr can be faked... but this does not really solve the problem considering when you go to get smogged they test the egr for proper functioning. Now for the interesting part, the newer toyota vvt-i and vvtl-i engines reduced emisions so much it got rid of the use of the egr valve, therefore the 7th gen celica's do not need egr's also the beams 3s-ge does not need one either. Most of you are now thinking "Hey if I go for the beams engine it will be legal for smog because they dont require an egr" well this is somewhat true but considering it was not an optional engine for our cars the smog shop shows that our cars require an egr because they were not passed by the EPA to run without them.

Now I hope I am right with all that but please someone correct me if I am wrong.
